The official tips you've learned from experience thread.

Surely someone has some good tips/tricks to share.

Here's another that most might know.

Zip tie pan gaskets to the pan in 3 or 4 places to hold it in place. When you get some bolts threaded, remove the ties and finish installing the pan.

Thanks! Winter project just got a bit easier!! Have done before without doing this. It will make for much less cursing, and more time to drink beer I'm sure!

-If you have a stock balancer, take the bolt out, red loctite it in, and Tq to 250ftlbs, then check every oil change!
QUOTE]

I have never done this and don't know anyone who has. My car has over 100,000 mi on it. Never had an issue with the balancer.

Had this issue twice now, second one was at full throttle and broke the crank, first time was putting out from the stop light, cracks the balancer and cut off the cam sensor... killed the engine.. Look into it several people on here have had the issue.

Eliminate one of the biggest squeaks and keep some grease on that little round bumper under the hood at the center near the windshield. That loud squeak you hear on cold mornings is not a loose dash or windshield!

Definately! Grease it every month! thats a misleading noise that some people chase forever! LOL

Only two of the bolts holding the horn button in are real bolts.

Yea.... I used to have a perfect GN Horn Ring..... also don't overtorque the 2 "real" bolts. The "used-to-be-perfect" horn ring will crack as well.

1) You’re not the first to have an issue and wont be the last. 10-15 minutes of searching goes a long way.

2) If you have an issue don't beat on the car!

read, read, read and then read some more. you will save time, money and aggrevation if you research your issue first, these forums are a very valuable resource!!

You can't run 25 lbs of boost on pump gas

The ring gear bolts on my old 87 T with an open differential (non-posi) were reverse threaded. A regular impact wrench will loosen them IF you put it in reverse. Otherwise you end up buying a new gear set!

1)Dont use you door pull straps and make sure you tell everyone that rides in your car not to use them!!!!

2)Buy and use the $5 door edge guards that ur local auto parts house sells a hair drier helps when installing these...

3) Make it a point move your seatbelts out of the holders on the sides of the headrest so you dont rip them out..

4) Make sure that you fat friend either gets out and moves door away from curb or waits until you put the car in gear and move slightly forward to close his door thats stuck on the curb!!!
5) Only allow skinny chicks as passengers!!!

6) Back into your parking spot if you arent used to driving a car thats low with an air dam in the front

7) Target has grey towels that match our interiors and work great as seat covers just tuck them under the headrest ..they pull of easy at a carshow or for cleaning and soak up anything that might get spilled on them before it hurts your seats..

8) Carry a fire extinguisher even if you car is stock!!!!

9)If your passenger window rolls up on the outer part of the rubber thingie that supposed to line your window up to close right while on the freeway, roll the window back down partially ,crack the driver window, and roll the passenger window up again it will then close correctly..

10) Zip tie your vacum lines so they dont blow off under boost..

Besides a regular set of tools one should own a small mirror; good flashlights and a long extension magnet for those nuts and bolts that like to fly into the engine bay black holes.

If you have a TR you should own a factory manual.

Always have extra parts on hand. What ever you think you won't need is exactly what you'll need!

Never start a TR project without beer on hand. (Trust me on this one;) )

Alcohol (the denatured variety) is your friend.

A little rust always turns into alot of rust.

If you cannot work on your own car you should not buy a TR unless you have very deep pockets. Turbo Buick parts are usually made of gold or platinum and are priced accordingly.

Do it right the first time or you will have to do it again.

Always carry a few tools in your TR, you will eventually need them.

Put the dipstick tube in the trans while its unde rthe car/ before bolting it up to the block

Back in '87 when I bought my GN, little was known on how to make them run faster and the tweaking I was doing was done very little at a time and mostly on a "trial and error" basis, resulting on a lot of wasted runs and wear on the car, UNTIL one day, someone created the Scanmaster:wink: , which quickly became one of the most popular tools (along with the mandatory boost gauge! ) for tuning your GN.
Now it became possible to do some adjustments, make a run or two and see the results of your mods...:) It also helped in eliminating the guesswork as to which bolt-on "accessory" to buy or not...At the time, there were no Buick specialists (or very few) to turn to, and magazines which were our only source of information, were full of ads and articles about "bolt on's" supposed to make GN's go faster...(yeah, sure!...). A new gadget was showing up every month or so, making it more confusing . You had to try it for yourself to see if it really worked and often, you found out that what was advertised did very little on no improvement at all!... )
Then I met Fred Vetter, Jim d'Alessandro, and a little later Eric Shertz who all did some work on my car at one time or another. Thanks to them, I was able to improve my "E.T."s" with parts that really worked like a Dynotech "Stage 6" chip (thanks to Fred Vetter), an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, a Kenne-Bell front mount intercooler, and some sticky tires...But that's a long time ago and these guys aren't around anymore...

Claude.
