I don't watch a whole lot of tv.

I have been looking for ways to reduce expenses. I see where netflix allows one to download stuff for a fee including television shows and play then through a game console. The only drawback I can think of is that sports wouldn't be on there so I would go to the bar to see the game. I do a lot of that anyway so the money I save might still be less.

I just have to have the internet then, and a netflix subscription.

Anyone have thoughts on this?
TIA

I hear ya on the expenses. Cable for me is $130 a month and there isn't anything on! Wife likes a couple shows on HBO so guess there ain't much I am going to do about that:frown: Then we have the sports package for watching SpeedTV and Uconn bb games.

Did cut out getting the newspaper and that saves $360 a year!

Direct TV here and that means there's almost 300 channels of nothing on, lol. But at least it has speed tv, fuel tv & BBC for topgear:D. Usually end up watching movies I've seen before, but it's still the first 12 months I've had it, so it's not too expensive. The Qwest dsl is faster than what I had with comcast and it too is the first 12 months so it's cheaper as well.
Downside with the netflix and downloading to watch on game console is that you have to have highspeed internet, which could run up to $50 a month. We used to have the netflix package of 3 movies at a time, and with the Direct tv we cut it back to 2 at a time, may go less since I'm going to end up being out of town alot with the new job

Couple of expenses not mentioned.
Netflix...$10 bucks/ month for 1 movie out and unlimited instant watching
X-BOX or Wii...$300
X-box Live membership to get Netflix...$60 a year ( With LIVE membership, you get ESPN on Netflix, so you can watch some sports.)

Netflix drawbacks, new DVD's are held up for 30 days before you can rent it. Its a deal with the video stores to give them first shot at rentals. Not many drama T.V. shows to watch. No NCIS, LAW AND ORDER, CSI... a ton of other shows like Family Guy, Office, and the damn teenie-bopper shows.

I just got all this up and running less then a month ago, I like it so far.

Netflix is pretty good if you watch movies. If you just want to watch tv shows on the web go to hulu.com.

We have netflix with the one movie at time and unlimited web. Kids watch movies through their ps3, wife watches movies on her iphone.. Works pretty well overall.

If you have a tv with usb port and built in DivX decoder or a media player ( I have the first gen western digital media player ) check out :
Icefilms.info

also my other favourate -> megarelease.net as they have a better selection of blueray 1080p movies and many popular shows in HD 720p . I highly recommend getting the VIP access ( 6mo for 12 bucks ) which lets you download multiple files from megaupload at once and no waiting otherwise you have to wait 30 - 45 seconds and download one file at a time. It works well for icefilms and qss ( see bonus link below ) too.

I use an old 40gig external hard drive and a couple of 8gig memory sticks to save files on which I then hook to the media player and watch the shows.

bonus link:
mrbrownee70.com

I just recently built a fractal antenna and get about 9 digital hdtv stations in my area.

All of the above = free, the vip is optional but 12 bucks for 6 mo subcription shouldn't break the bank.

Say what

1980monte just a dum old boy from the hill what did you say Have tv with usb whats divX decoder or a media player? dvd,vcr,dvr,ps3 dont understand

currently working on all this current cable looking at direct, dish PS3 netflix capable dont watch alot, couple of shows a week couple diy, speed shows have at least 10-15 channels just blocked out easier to find somthing you want

I like netflix. Although I think I have seen everything worth watching on demand by now;) I get the one disc unlimited online deal. I think it is worth it. Something new everymonth. Plus the show ALL the movies on Starz...

I had netflix for a few months and it was good in the beginning, but their selections of online movies is very limited.

I like it. With the 1 movie at a time deal it is less then 10 bucks a month and there is a lot ondemand. If you have a blu-ray player already, it might be netflix ready (some are) or you can BUY a netflix ready blu-ray player for a bit over 100 bucks. That way you don't have to have a game system with a live membership if you don't want to. Netflix works great on our LG blu-ray player.

First see if you can get the digital/analoge channels in your area. Enter your zip/postal here
If you see stations you like that are listed in the green zone you can built an small antenna like this one and should pull in the strong signals. I built this one in about an hour. There are many dyi designs that are bigger and pull in the weaker signals listed in the yellow and red zone of the listing. 40-60 bucks can get ya a pritty good antenna too like the DB8. Im able to watch the hockey in 1080i and 6.1 surround sound - I actually started to watch hockey games again.

DivX is one form of video compression. Its like reducing the resolution of a photo that you would post here except its for video.
I mentioned websites that use the DivX as its the best bang for the buck ( video quality vs file size ) There are other forms of video compression that are better but this is the most popular. The video file is usually a .avi extension
( pictures from a digital camera are usually a .jpg , music is usually .mp3 etc as examples of other file extensions you might be familiar with )

The media player is like your windows media player or vlc player on your PC except you can hook directly to your tv like the ps3, vcr, dvd, cable box. ( it displays pictures and plays music too as well as playing vids ) There are a few companies making these ( 50 - 100 bucks ) but I would look for the hdmi cable hook up on the unit if you have an hdtv already. Also look for the optical audio cable feature for real digital 6.1 surround sound if your set up ( amp ) permits this input.
Like I mentioned earlier you hook up the memory stick or hard drive containing the video files to the player via usb ports, pick the show on the menu, press play.

the second option is to look for the el cheapo dvd player ( I p/u one for 40 bucks to use on my old 20 yr old tv ) with a usb port on the front and it must specify it can play DivX video like this one .
Use the pc to download vids onto the memory stick then plug the stick into dvd player usb port and your done.

OK now the actual tv with media player.

If you have a newer tv with the media player built in like this one, well your in luck as you can skip purchasing the the stuff mentioned above. Many brands are now incorporating the DivX decoder / usb input port combo built into the tv. Look for the DivX symbol on the box

here is another example of a tv with the media player feature in action:
YouTube - LG 2009 TVs - USB Connectivity and DivX HD how to

I have netfix option on my tv with internet line hook up but never used it so i cant tell ya which looks better but for run of the mill tv shows I dont mind the old standard definition ( 480p ) resolution. For the " Epic " movies and some of the syfy tv shows with all the CGI bling and stuff blowing up I like the HD files.

Internet - this is more of a tip for my friends in Canada but may apply to others - If you have B3LL or R0G3R$ as an internet provider that caps you at 25gig/mo then charges ya 2 or 3 bucks / gig after that ...... especially if you want the 1080p blueray stuff. ( 6-8 gig / movie ) you will exceed the limit and pay the penalty. ( I was a subscriber to one of the BIG 2 .) I recommend you switch providers to one with better value.

If you dont like the hassle of going to the pc , searching the web, downloading , waiting, unplug memory device, hook to tv.....then netflix is likely the way to go. But like anything else - once you do it a few times its as easy as retrieving your e-mail or logging into the TB website.

Hope this answers your question (s) and will help you decide on alternates to repeat programs and crap channels on cable/$at .

hello peoples: I'm behind the times with this stuff. I use to have a video place near me where I could walk to and it was nice. Then if I wanted porn it was a longer walk. Today I just saw my local Blockbuster going out of business. That means another job gone and another pc. of my past gone too.

Blockbuster put themselves out of business. They did it in our town too. The late fees turned everyone off and the prices to rent were just stupid. Then they downsized the selection and wanted you to order online, but price was just like renting. I dont feel bad for them at all. As soon as ours closed, a new company moved in. Family Video. Much nicer selection and lower prices. Kid movies are free and for each new rental, you get an older flick for a buck. Blockbuster NEVER had deals like that. By the way, the Family Video employs more people then Blockbuster by at least 6-10, and it open 24-7.

I have the netflix one at a time deal. I don't get to watch much tv, but this works out alright for me. Well worth it in my opinion.

We've had Netflix for 5 years and are very pleased with it. It's amazing how we get the DVD's in one day. I'd highly recommend it.

We have direct tv and netflix... There's not much on the sat except the occasional show here and there but, it's nice to always have a movie on tap for the weekends... Haven't been out to a theater in a year or two... I guess that save syou a little bit of money considering the movie theater prices these days...

We have netflix 2 dvd's checked out at a time through mail, and we've hooked the wii up to stream them over the wifi network to our tv for on demand, although it usually only plays Thomas the Train in our house...
