My family and I have decided to move to Nashville. Lot's of reasons and lots of questions for my Buick brothers and sisters.

1) What's the car scene like in Nashville? Buick presence? Coffee and cars?

2) Where do I get my junk worked on when I'm there? I have a disability that limits my personal wrenching.

3) What are the fun things to do car related there? I'm very excited about a longer racing season, being closer to RC's house, MUCH closer to the NATS every year, and generally nice roads from the lack of frost.

4) Anything I need to be aware of? Car thieves abundant in Nashville?

Thanks for the help guys.

Looking to make new friends if anyone wants to get together and show me the ropes.

I would love to join ya ! June 2 and the pot holes are still ridiculous up here along with the rest of the roads up here in CT.

There are a few Buicks in middle TN. Here in the BG area there are several also. I can't tell you much about the car scene in Nashville, but there is an 1/8 mile track on the north side of town. There are several car shows and swap meets in the area throughout the year. Welcome to the area and good luck with your move.

I'm jealous. No really. I know it's "hillbilly hollywood" but I really dig music, all kinds of music and every time I'm in Nashville I just want to stay and soak it all in. Wife had to go there a couple times for work seminars and I looked forward to being there. Going through there this Thursday on the way to power tour too. I'd go broke going to the grand ol opry and I don't even care how gay that sounds.

There aren't a tremedous amount of Buicks, but you'll see one or two at cars shows around town. There is a big Cars and Coffee gathering in Franklin. Some of the big time music executives bring our there bugatti's, Lambo's and Ferrari's. No joke, there have been more than one Bugatti show up before. I think it's about time we had a turbo buick gathering somewhere around town.

This is going to be a tough one. I'm not aware of any shops in the area that I would trust with a Buick for simple troubleshooting and repair, but I do all my own work and haven't really looked. There are a couple performance shops in town that might be ok, but they aren't buick specialists by any means.

If your in Nashville or a surrounding suburb, there are two "local" tracks. Music City Raceway is about 25 min. north of downtown. Bowling Green is about an hour drive. There are also US43 in Lawrenceburg about 1.5 hours south. Huntsville is about 2 hours south. Memphis is a 3 hour drive. There are a couple more out I40 towards Knoxville that are 1.5 and 2 hours away. There are car shows every friday night in most of the major suburbs to Nashville during the summer. A couple of them are ~200 cars. We have a Good Guys show every year (Just happened a few weeks ago). I haven't street raced in years, but I know it still happens and I kinda know who and where they still do it.

Not that I know of. But, I don't live in Nashville either. I'm in Hendersonville, which is about 20 minutes north of town.

Are you planning to move into Nashville or just anywhere in the Middle TN area? If you're moving to Nashville (Davidson County) there are some areas to avoid. If you want a suburb, Murfreesboro, Hendersonville, Franklin, Bellevue, Mt. Juliet are all nice. Cost of living is low around here. Most any counties surrounding Davidson are going to have emissions testing unless you go with an antique tag. If you like music, downtown is pretty good. Even if you don't like country, there are plenty of types of music. If you like sports, we have the Titans, Predators, Nashville Sounds (minor league baseball), Vanderbilt and UT in Knoxville is a day trip to and from games. The Smokey Mtn's are a few hours away along with Dollywood, Gatlinburg and GNS performance. We have a few really nice lakes if your into that. It's a sportsmans paradise if you like to hunt and fish. The summers are hot and muggy, but generally winter isn't too bad compared to up north. We like sweet tea and meat and three restaurants and most of us wear shoes and have 90% of our teeth. :)

The local car forum is Streetntrack.net. We had a bigger forum membership not long ago, but the owner shut it down and it's taking a while to rebuild it.

Thanks everyone! I have the technical skills needed to do a lot of diagnosing on my car, but I just need help throwing parts on it. @Mike E , do you know if I can even get a antique tag for the Buick? I'm thinking of leaving it registered in IA to my parents house as the storage place to avoid the emissions test. We are most likely moving to Bellevue to start. A buddy lives there and we'll rent short term until we find the area we want to live in after we get our jobs in place etc.

Thanks again guys. I will be on the hunt for a turbo Buick person local to help me wrench.

I'm a redneck at heart and it seems like you can still make a good living in Nashville and still be a redneck, so it suits me fine. TFW is more than welcome to come and stay at our house any time. I can't get enough music and bbq so that's great too.

For those don't know as well, it's hot and humid in IA too. I'll take more of the same summer weather for less of the winter weather any day.

Yes, you can get antique tags. I have them on my 87. As of this year anything 89 and older can get them. They are permanent tags, so you only buy them once and you are done. No emissions testing or inspection. You are just restricted to weekend driving, driving to car shows or "testing". I do a lot of testing.

Here is the application. You just fill it out, take it to the DMV with about $80 and you are good to go. http://www.tn.gov/revenue/forms/titlereg/f1312901Fill-in.pdf Most of the form applies to if you want use an older tag (like a 1987 tag on an 87 GN),

I've been caught in an IA snow storm and I promise you'll never see that here.

You should be able to get Methanol at Full Throttle Race parts in Nashville. http://www.fullthrottleraceparts.com/

Ya, I drive both of mine (antique tagged) virtually everywhere, and have never been hassled. Don't know how sticky they are about that around Nashville though. I just make sure never to take it to a shopping parking lot. The "pat" answer if ever stopped is just to say "on my way to see my mechanic, or body shop for a work estimate". ;)

TN also permits the use of 'year-of manufacture' plates as well when you have antique registration. Simply find an old '87/'88 TN plate at a swap meet or eBay and run it on the back. Just be sure to keep your actual TN antique plate and registration inside the vehicle if (and when) you get pulled over. I carry a copy of the statute to educate the officers who actually believe they've just pulled someone over with a 27-year expired registration.

I finally emailed our local police chief here so he could make sure all officers on the force were made aware of the statute and then I got 'nabbed' going to the Nats last year by a State Trooper with a plate reader on I-40 near Nashville. I educated him as well.

I never knew this!!!! How in the world can they do a "plate check" if you're not carrying any visible plate registered to the car???

Move to Woodbury in DeCalb county. Very pretty town and small. Not to mention less than an hours drive from nashburg. Maury county is also an option.

Apparently Illinois does this too. I was talking to a GN owner at a car show last week and she had some sort of 1987 Dealer plate on her car along with the correct antique plate in the trunk. I thought it was kind of weird too!
