I'm going to get into details about the build right away. I have my theory on what happened to this motor, what do you guys think? This motor was new the summer of 2012 and Long Hauled the Hot Rod Power Tower last year. Some around town miles. What do you guys think went wrong? The crank is broke in front of 5 and 6, this took out the trans bellhousing too. There's nothing left under the cam bearings, block is broke out from under the main cap.

I saw this on Facebook last night. What if the crank flexed, broke then took out the block.

Yeah we've been thinking this over quite a bit. I'm not going to post my ideas right away, just going to wait it out and see what people say.

JD,

Whose engine? is this yours? Whosever sorry for the loss... when did it let go? Was it under boost?

Aaron, this is Austin's new motor. It let go under normal driving, but.......normal driving to Austin usually means peddle to the floor, stereo up as loud as possible, you know the drill.:D Austin said, normal driving speed though!

Strange how #5 piston came apart and left the pin intact in the rod. Would tight ring gaps stick the piston hard enough to yank the bosses out?

Looking at the casting number, I'm not sure #5 rod is in the way but looks like its a 484 block perhaps that helped lead to the carnage, some of it looks thin.

Detonation or crank walk. How do the webbing under the main caps look?

Aaron, JD, sorry to hear of your misfortune. Hope things go better on future. I know it's hard to shell out this kind of money for a motor to have it break in such a short period. I would have expected a good 5 years of seasonal abuse out of a motor like this.

Hey dont give me bad juju :p ....thats Austin's engine

Fan belt was to tight...lol...j/k, looking like an overboost that stretched the crank out,(all the mains are crooked) either from at that time,or from over a long period of time...that block finally said "No"

Curious, did this motor run a power plate?

HOLY CRAP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT MUCH LEFT THERE !!!!
SORRY ABOUT YOUR LOSS AUSTIN. OUCH :(

I'm sorry for your loss. It's a shame to spend good money and experience a failure in short odrer. FWIW, it looks like the crank broke and then all hell insued thereafter.

Neal

severe detonation, crack in the crank cheek more power than the block could hold. how much power was this making at the time? I defer you to my exhibit f for fubar! I feel your pain brother.

and like the monkey said when he whizzed  P1050738.JPGP1050751.JPGP1050742.JPG into the cash register-this gonna run into some money baby. This was my disaster

What power level? If the caps were walking the crank moving all over the place. It likely developed cracks before breaking. Usually you can hear some clicking or some other uncommon engine noise before it fails.
