Can cops legally do this?

LOL.. Yep..pretty much it.. I'd leave them their cars if it were up to me..Just nail them in the wallet REAL hard like they do withy DWI's....Take their license for a few months, then they can have their badass rides, but not drive them.. :p

yeah but like i been saying...we know what we got and dont have to prove it at every light.

The kids with 500 bucks in nitrous and a big fartcan out the back seem to always have to prove to someone what they think they got and as long as they are the ones acting stupid perhaps that will deflect attention away from me as i sneak by.

Agreed and probably very true...I know most of the guys I work with had no idea what GN was at first.. They all thought it was an MC or Cutlass and used to break my chops about it...Till a couple saw me running it and blast past a couple of fart can mobiles..

I'm against conviscation. It's one of those"you let the man take one right and than another...." pretty soon no more rights.

I ran into a scarey situation back in 95 on I-35 in Oklahoma. I was in the GN returning from the Winston Cup race in FtWorth. I lived in Omaha at the time. I was climbing a grade with the cruise on going a tick or two over the speed limit. I come up on a couple of RVs and at the same time spot two troopers sitting in the median. I flip on my turn signal and proceed to pass the RV's without flipping off the cruise. I signal to move back in. Well next thing I see one of the troopers flying up the road and pull in behind me. On come the blue lights and I pull over. Now this is what I like about all of you LEOs who post here. The reason I was pulled over was because I didn't signal my lane change long enough. WTF!! Another lame probable cause excuse from some POS LEO! So anywaw here is the scarey part. I'm sitting in the front seat of the cruiser while he is running the paperwork. Just another fishing expedition from a POS LEO. So we are BS'n about cars while the secret code of clicks and humms are going through the radio and I'm not sweating it because I'm legal through and through. Well I can tell nothing is going to happen. Than the POS starts yamering about his Caprice over heating. Now this car had a dash cam so I can see my car on the screen. The POS gets out and pops his hood open. Well there goes the video as all you can see being recorded is the top side of a black hood. I lean over and look at the temp gauge and it's stone cold.Remember I work for a Chevrolet dealer and I know 9C1 cars dont overheat. Especially cars under warranty like this one was. The POS sees me do this and tells me to get out of the car. So we are standing in front and I happen to say I dont understand why the car is over heating as I can hear both fans going like crazy. Now he wants to search the GN. I'm like no F'n way. But I want to get out of there ASAP so I pop the trunk and the POS proceeds to dump out my duffle bag along with my camera case and than the spare tire. Than he does the same to the interior and than the engine compartment. I guess OK doesn't have any drug sniffing dogs. Anyway about 15 minutes later he done gives up. Man that was close. I was thinking he was going to plant something the way he was acting. I just left everything in the trunk and high tailed it out of there to the Kansas border. Now this guy was a little bit of a gearhead. I'm thinking the guy was hoping to tow my car in and throw my a$$ in jail just so he could buy the GN in an auction 30 days later or something. That would have been easier pickings if the POS LEO had some type of conviscation law. All he would need to do is say I was speeding and I would have lost the car. We all know cops dont lie, right? Just look at the pi$$ poor excuse he had for probable cause.

I hope you peeps who are in favor of this dont ever go through a situation like I did. But than again when I read threads like this I change my mind.

Never thought of the cop wanting the car...that's another good angle. What was the probable cause that he gave you for wanting to search the car? If there is no probable cause, you should ask "Am I free to leave?" as they cannot hold you any longer than what is reasonable to write the ticket.
I would have also ask for the hood to be closed so the cam could record it...BUT....
Similar situation happened to my step-daughter a few months back...lights came on behind her...at night..she waited till the next street light to pull over..which is 3 doors down from our house..cops ordered her out of the car at gun point because sher failed to yield right of way... she went exactly 25 seconds from the time the lights came on until the time she stopped!! WTF
Searched her car and her purse..found nothing..had 3 other backup cops arrive..all for a 5'4" 100 lb girl by herself frightened out of her mind in the back of a cop car... When challenged in court and review of the dash cam was requested...the magic response was "There was something wrong with the recorder in that car..and only the audio portion was given... what POS...thats why cops get a bad rap...there's some good ones, but then they stand up for the POS's... cops abuse any powers they have..end of story.. Surprised they didn't plant drugs in your car when they searched it..what would prove it was not yours otherwise...Thats why I would NEVER allow them to search my car unless there was probable cause...and the simple fact they should not be allowed to confiscate your car for any traffic offense...thats guilty until proven innocent if they take it on the spot.

Don't trust the police officers, but you can trust your local GM technician or other mechanic, yeak OK.

The only good cops....are...the ones that inhabit this forum!!!!

and two of my buddies from high school

Hey from my personal experience most police officers are just normal good guys that have a difficult job to do, but like any large group/population there are going to be bad seeds. It happens. I personally have 4 good friends that are police officers and one I know for sure is not as honest as he could be. A quick google search will bring up plenty of cases of misconduct and rotten abuses of power. Reading stories like this ABC News: Chicago Cops Forced to Disband Elite Unit make me think that the show The Shield might not be too far off in some cases. It's scary that you might bump into some evil ba$tard that could get away with taking your car! Scares me to death. I'm not some guy with a ton of money who could fight it out for years and fill the pockets of some lawyer.

I don't think anyone here is discrediting police in general. It's the system we have a problem with.

I was really tempted not to get in the middle of this flame war, but the little message above tells me I haven't posted in awhile, so what the heck?

I can't load the video for whatever reason, but I know the general deal going on here.
(Disclaimer.. I am not a cop hater. They have a very hard job to do, but like was said before, there are bad apples, and being human, no one is perfect.)

Question..? Do these cars they are using carry dash cams? Video backup? Any means of providing proof of the act? Radar guns even? At least if they had a radar gun, and you had a detector, you would know its more likely to be legit.
If not, then it goes back to your word against the cop. Thats a lot to lose based on just someones word. Like someone pointed out, maybe the cop likes your car... its a case of "I want that one". "I'll bait him". Because he/she wears a badge, their word is 100% proof you were doing what he said, and you lose your car.

Reading this whole thread reminds me of the ending in "I, Robot" I was watching last night. The robots declare that logically, they have to protect you from yourself. So, every human is only as trustworthy, honest, smart, etc as your lowest common denominator. Kinda like warning labels on coffee cups that read "Caution, Contents May be Hot". Because some idiot sued McDonalds when she spilled her coffee. DUH!
So if you are like me, 30 years old, have plenty of time behind the wheel, learned your lessons young (2 speeding tix at 18), you are still as dumb and reckless as the next kid who passes his road test. Why? Because the gov't has to protect you from yourself. Nevermind that you're older and wiser now, that you've lived awhile longer and learned your lessons. You are still as dumb as the next guy. :-/

Case in point: My friend was arrested for DWI. He wasn't even on a public road. He was in the parking garage. It was the middle of winter, about 5 degrees out, and the bars closed their doors. He lives 20 miles from the bar. He calls a friend, says, I'm too drunk to drive, can you come pick me up? Meantime, hes freezing to death. In that part of town nothing is open. Not even the gas stations. What does he do? He got in his car, turns it on to run the heater. Lays down in the backseat. Hindsight is 20/20, put yourself in his place.

Another person I know, was arrested for DWI. She was driving down residential streets, music blaring, blowing stop signs, drove out of town towards home and she gets pulled over. Even hit part of the parking garage on the way out putting a huge dent in her car.

Both cases, same punishment. Fair?

Some kid pulls up and revs at you, youre in an industrial park, swamp road, middle of cow country, whatever. Its 2am. You nail it up to the speed limit then let off. Fun huh? You just lost your ride, because that "kid" was a cop. Hes seen your car around, and thinks he can get it for himself.

Some kids line up on a residential street, at 9pm, nail it, get to 80 and keep on going past 100. One loses control and hits a tree. The other gets arrested after a homeowner called 911 and reported it. He loses his ride.

Laws are anti-freedom by definition. The question is, how much freedom are you willing to give up to have the gov't protect you?

Making a fake cop car is easier than you think. Trust me. Older caprices are getting harder to get, but are still available. Lights are nothing. One of my volunteer friends had a crown vic with a light inside on the dash. He even had a light bar on top before that. He could have easily turned that light on and pulled anyone he wanted over. Now, replace that crown vic with a Mustang. Makes you think a bit more about pulling over. Replace said Mustang with a tinted window, F&F style 350Z. You honestly can tell me youre gonna pull over for that? Not me. I dont care what lights are on it. I've recently seen some Subaru 2.5 RS cars with the lights hidden in the hood scoop. Gimme a break. I can take my Cruiser, go to autozone and buy wig wags to hide in the grille. Hell, theres red leds for show in there right now. If I switched out one side to blue, and came up behind you with them going, are you pulling over? If you say yes, then I got some property with a beautiful ocean view here in upstate NY I wanna sell ya.

Theres all sorts of reasons for a cop to pull you over. When I daily drove my Regal, I heard them all.
-Matched description of some car they are looking for... riiight. You followed me for 15 miles and thats the best you could come up with?
-Your license plate light was out. Now its back on. Must be a short, you oughta have that looked at.
-I saw something fall off your car back there, you might want to get that looked at.
-You were swerving all over the road back there ("There was a dead animal in the road") Thats odd, I didn't see anything. Let me check you out.

1. I just see way too much potential for abuse of power here.
2. Time and money could be better spent elsewhere.
3. Its a drive for those that do it. Its a need for a rush. Like football, basketball, whatever. Those are all legal, and you can readily find a place to fulfill that drive to compete. Humans are competitive in nature. Laws, fines, jail are only ways to suppress the drive. Build tracks. Hold legal drags, sponsor the tracks, don't punish the crimes once committed, prevent them from happening. My last time at a track, I drove 2 hours to an eighth mile. Waited 4 hours to run. Got one run in. Drove 2 hours home. Had to take the day off work to get there in time to run, spent $30 entry to run once. Waste of time, money, energy, effort. On the way home, I blasted past some kid in a riced up civic like he was standing still. Even without going over the limit. Drive satisfied. For the time being.
Adrenaline is an addiction. Some people get it from sports, football, skydiving, some from racing. Other legal addictions... lotto, alcohol, smoking, horse racing, casinos (in some places). All bad for you in varying degrees. Shouldn't we ban them all, you know, to save us from ourselves?

The key is education. Young drivers think they are immortal. Give them one of those test cars and tracks that can simulate conditions while still being safe. Show them what "beer goggle driving" looks and feels like. Show them what it feels like to lose control of a car going 80mph. Make them try and talk on their cell phones and navigate a course. Make them stay up for 48 hours and try to drive sleepy. Scare them straight while they are still impressionable. 5 hour courses are a joke, the road test is a joke. anyone with half a brain can get their license. (and cute girls with only a 1/4 of one as well). Kids are too used to playing need for speed, and running into crap like nothing happens. Put them in a real world test car, and you get scared like no video game can scare you. Experienced drivers respect the power and responsibilty of a car. But we learn that over years of seat time. Spend the money and teach the young ones what took us years to learn. Mandatory defensive driving is a start, but not enough. Kids need to be scared out of their sense of immortality before they are given a set of keys on their own.

(P.S. If you ever heard of the Discovery show "Mythbusters", they did a special on the ideas of various impairments on driving, cell phone, alcohol, sleeplessness, etc. Pretty interesting. They did the test with the local PD watching over, and a stunt driver coordinating the tests. The results aren't what you would think.
I also saw a TV show about how to drive on snowy and icy roads. They have a car with what amounts to a 4 wheel lift on wheels under it, to simulate traction loss at varying amounts. Great real-world experience. )

I've heard more than 1 report of fake unmarked cars pulling over women and they got raped. They say to drive to the nearest police station and stop there. Of course if it's a real cop by then he'll be steaming so when you do stop they'll get you for everything and more so it's no win situation...

YA Know unmarked cars are good for undercover work. But to use them for traffic stops is stupid. the best way to deter speeders is with a good ole Black & white or whatever cops car colors are in your area.

To this day when I see an 80's impala my foot has the impulse to let off the gas. its been about 17 years since i actually saw one in service.

Wow this thread has legs.

I dont see the need for "plain wrappers" either. Just this morning I almost got nailed by "The Man" for doing a bonehead move in the GN. He was a Sheriffs Dept Tahoe with a low profile light bar with clear lenses. And he was sitting in front of a used car dealer. Now if I had seen him from the side I would have recognized the decals and star on the white SUV. But noooo! He was facing oncoming traffic. He looked like every other soccer mom in a SUV. It was more stealth than the motorcycle cops who usually sit there running laser. Those low profile light bars with the clear lenses are almost invisable.

Simple:

1. Racing is for the track.

2. Become a cop, get a badge, and then no more tickets unless you kill somebody.

I think the reason for the undercover cop cars is so you'll think to yourself "Is that guy a cop?" Sort of makes you want to watch your p's and q's...also for revenue income too.

A marked cop car removes all doubt. When one is sighted all of the sudden everyone breaking the law changes their tune. For a moment anyways.

I know I'm new so I'll try not to make too many people mad, just saying my thoughts here.

1.) If I see a 350z with flazing lights and neons and glow in the dark gas caps I don't pull over, I point and laugh at them! (I did this today infact)

2.) I'm not street racing, I'm speeding

3.) If you want something thats fast and that I'll pull over for get out the chopper:smile:

4.) If they start confiscating cars in my area, they aren't stealing mine. I could wire a kill-switch that'll burn it to the ground before I see a cop flying by in it:wink:

5.) These cars were meant to put a smack down on unsuspecting mustangs, ricers, etc. Be safe and reasonable and have fun;)

i'm all for law and order but this the kinda thing that makes me say **** tha police. i could see them provoking a race with that slobra and then busting someone.

Just a few minutes ago

I was at a light next to an unmarked GMC SUV
I was on the middle lane and he was on the right lane.
So I rev the engine 2 or 3 times
Press on the brakes and load up the suspension and inch forward then I look at the SUV (cop) and nod my head (like a “what’s up” gesture)
The light turns Green and I just roll out of the line and he floors it.
I then made an immediate lane change onto the right lane then a right turn.
While doing this I am peaking at the SUV(COP) he goes about 150 feet out and from the right lane he makes a left hand U turn (crossing 2 lanes and jumping onto another)jumps over the divider and crosses traffic again (not a lot) and pulls me over.
He comes over and asks me “what’s your problem”
I said “what are you talking about”
He said “for revving the engine and trying to race me”
I said Dude I am driving an all stock 275K mile suburban that when I stop if I don’t hold the brake and gas at the same time it shuts off.
He looked at me with a DUHHHHHH look and said “get out of here”
So even if you don’t race be careful I am almost shore that if I was driving a HOT ROD or performance car I would have to call a lawyer in the morning.
Can you say “POLICE STATE”
I am not Bashing on the cops I know that with out you guys (COPs) it would total chaos but from the character traits I see in my Cop friends and family I can say most Cops are ___________ maybe you don’t want to be but step out of your job and look at what you do for a living “hunt non law followers”
