Is the fluid foamy? If so it could be sucking air like mentioned above. But your probably right and the pump is just shot finally.

+2 the starter is heat soaking,bad motor. I would go with an Lt1 mini starter to replace it.

My car does this if the base fuel pressure is a little too high causing a richer idle. If I turn it down the smooth idle returns.
