Better than the Scanmaster?

Would you still have the ability to adjust a chip with a unit like this?
I use an autoXray scan tool at the moment plus a knock gauge to monitor knock.
I like the scan tool for diagnostic it gives you the code number and a description it can also capture up to 10 frames of data to help diagnosis problems.

This reminds me of when I wrote the WinALDL and Turbometer Pro ''how to" articles about 10 years ago.

Oh ya, that was another one I remember too.

Might be cool to play around with but the scanmaster is always there and ready to go.
The ability to recall knock and o2 millivolts at any time is hard to beat.
And,once we add the Powerlogger with its I/O board,we can monitor and log other things that this can't. It's not an improvement, just different and I would argue a step backwards.

This has the capability of monitoring 4 additional analog inputs WITHOUT adding anything else. Perhaps you should refrain from making unsupported comments if you are unfamiliar with what it can or can't do.

How so? You can't log boost without a map. You can't log pressure witout a sender. You can't log temp without a probe.

Meaning nothing needs to be added to the adapter to be capable of reading added on of course additional sensors. You're up to $500 for a Scanmaster and power logger before you can even plug in external sensors. This with the app is $110 delivered.

I have a Scanmaster. I LOVE what it does but hate how it does it. I am simply posting this as a less expensive alternative that allows multipule parameters to be displayed at once and has data capture ability. Not to mention the hot air cars can use it with no modifications. How anyone can call any of that "a step backwards" is beyond me. I'm trying to help others here and can't understand the mentality expressed in some of these comments.

Thanks for the advise.

Pl requires extra sensors if you want to monitor fuel pressure or other Temps like trans too.

.

If you're going to diss Powerlogger, can your magic device log virtually every data puked out by the computer? NOT even close. Can it log at 18 frames per second?? Ya, right. You can't seriously try comparing this magic device you've fallen in love with to the Powerlogger, Really?

Keep your comparisons on the same planet at least. Keep the comparison to the Scanmaster if you must. ALDL vs. ALDL. Powerlogger is not and aldl scan tool.

I think a tool like this vs powerlogger is not really the comparison (and I hope that's not what he was saying). A better way to look at it is like comparing a tablet to an actual PC. Most times you can get by with using your tablet. You can can get your email, maybe surf a little, do some FBing, but when it's time to get serious work done sometimes you just gotta reach back for the PC. For prob ~70% of us, the Scanmaster is all we need, so if this can update and replace that tool (and be less inexpensive to boot), I think that would be a cool thing. The Scanmaster has had a hella long run maybe it's time to move on to something, ahem, more up-to-date - not that I don't totally love red LEDs or anything...

Technically speaking it's not really cheaper, because you still have to have some kind of Android display device and apps. I think the Iphone users are probably going to be SOL again when it comes to apps for this device, so they'll likely need to acquire and android device of sorts. although I don't have an ios device to verify that.

I don't think it's fair to talk about the expense of a phone, tablet,or laptop in the comparison of the two because we all have one or all of these anyway. It's also not fair to talk about the added expense of sensors and wiring to monitor other systems as they both require this added expense. I,m on the same page as TurboBuRick when he said that the Scanmaster always being right there with the ability to recall the most important data at an instant is hard to beat. My Scanmaster is mounted on top of the dash so it is in my line of sight and easy to touch.I think it's priceless and never think about price when I make a decision to purchase something for my car with money I don't have to impress people I don't know and might never meet. The other thing that helps to read information in an instance/at a glance is the so called antiquated /old school/out of date red LEDs. I don't need to see a lot of things at a glance, just the two that Scanmaster allows and the LEDs allow for the highest recognition at a quick glance. The other problem I have is with the so called smart phone that I here so many refer to as " MY STUPID PHONE!" I don't want to view all of this information on a small screen. I find it much easier to view anything and everything on my laptop and would prefer my 60" TV.

This is my mindset on this issue and I believe many others as well. In life there is never a one size fits all, however this looks like a good alternative/option that will satisfy many.

Yeah, I agree. I think this is more of a style/form choice than a function one and that is a good thing. I love having options. You know what I mean - many paths to the the end. I have a Scanmaster and was thinking of getting a Powerlogger, but I might check this out just to open my imagination to some different possibilities. It would be nice to listen to my music, watch my car parameters when I'm driving, and still have the option to use the device to my read sports and email when I'm home on the throne. For six months out of the year, my Scanmaster just sits there. I love it, but man it's lazy as hell. Options, man, just options... Maybe the title of the thread set the wrong tone. We all know how passionate people get when it comes to how they like to do things. "Better" is in the eye of the beholder. Over my many years of home ownership, I've never met a contractor who didn't think the way HE plasters with the tools HE uses is, obviously, the way it SHOULD be done.

But back to the issue. Me?I'm one of the 2% people in the world who have an Android phone, an iPad AND a android tablet (Galaxy Note 10.1), so obviously I am not married to any one system. They all have their specific uses.

For this situation, I'm looking at something like this tablet.

At $50 for the tablet $80 for the cable and $20 for the app, someone who is not already in the Android world (or maybe just wanted an add-on device) could get in for $150. That's not a bad price at all for something you can use for six months for one thing then throw it on the livingroom table and use it for a universal remote (plus all else it can do) AND cheaper than a Scanmaster to boot. I tend to not get passionate about the tools I use, so I'm always open to new and different possibilities.

BTW I also really love this dock....hmmm.

To me, anything that gets me excited about my baby is a good thing :)

Don't feel bad ... they are just set in their ways and live in a 2 dimensional world .... if your even remotely clever this APP is extremely useful and you can get a lot accomplished with it.

Thanks for sharing and thinking out of the box .. THUMBS UP !!

Actually WE ALL are set in our ways. Just about different things. Me? There is no way in hell I'm buying a chick a drink at the bar, sorry not happening and it's not-negotiable. ;)

Some people get really offended when someone finds something new that is not sold by one of the vendors on here and is comparible too something they sell for 2 or 3 times as much. I see it all the time on here...

The vendors are what keep this board up and going for us to enjoy, and if you're unwilling to support them, then you're really not all that welcome here and can join one of the other boards.
I'm outa this thread.
