New Navy uniform

Today I had an interesting thing happen to me. I was in the USN's newest working uniform on my way home, and I stopped at BP (local gas station), I held the door for the woman behind me (common thing for me to do) and she placed her hand on my shoulder and said:

'Bless you for serving our country'

then, as she walked away, she asked:

'You are in the service, right?'

which of course I replied:

'Yes ma'am'

This just really made me feel weird. Our newest uniforms have basically ZERO pride associated with them. People don't even KNOW that I am IN the military, let alone that I have served almost a decade and am actually fairly high ranking (for Navy enlisted, that is).

Here they are for anyone that hasn't seem them:

What do y'all think of these new uniforms for the Naval service? Some aspects I like. They are much easier to take care of and wear. Some I don't like. I don't like the level of recognition there are for the uniforms. I understand that they are new and will just take time for people to recognize them...but I just don't understand why they changed them.

Thoughts?

Seems like the services are just trying to outdo one another with uniforms. The marines came out with the digitized camo first. I think it looks good and can be had in desert and woodland versions, very functional.

Then the Army adapted the digitized grey version. Which they have soon realized as a mistake and are already field testing a new field uniform replacement. Which I like.

The Air force trying to keep up with the Jones's came up with the tiger stripe blue field uniform?? Not sure what they were thinking.

And now the Navy has gone and done this, wow. Im sorry it just looks dorkalicious and your gonna have to shine boots, WTF??? On the other hand the dress uniform below looks good, just to similiar to USMC class B's.

Just my opinion...

Certain elements within the Navy have done everything they can to look as much like Marines as possible for the last 20 years or so. First it was the MA's and Security guys wearing Woodland utilities. Now it's this khaki shirt and dark trousers thing, with a piss-cutter. WTF. I first saw them at Pass & ID at NAS North Island a few months ago - thought they were JROTC or something. No offense, but if you want to dress like a Marine, then pay the price and join the friggin' Marines!

That new digital cammie thing is B.S. too. What the hell is wrong with khaki for Chiefs and Officers, and dark blue coveralls for the swabbies aboard ship? And what's wrong with traditional cracker-jacks and dixie cups for a shore service uniform?

If you're on shore in a desert environment, plain khaki BDU's should be fine.

Stupid.

And don't get me started with the Army's "me too" digital BDU. That velcro was a GREAT idea!

Many of the Navy's long standing traditions (particularly uniform) have been going down the crapper for over 20 years now.
Glad I retired when I did.

I was kinda thinking the same thing about these uniforms just the other day. I remember when my father was in the military and when I was in as well. The uniforms were distinct and everyone knew who everyone was with. Now, it's all a jumbled up mess.

I can't tell who is in what service at all...

Why do sailors need camoflage? (ie: the guys on the boats)

+1. There wasn't a damned thing wrong with uniform the Navy wore traditionally. Dress whites, dress blues. Work uniform was a light blue shirt button-up, bell bottom trousers (dungarees), and boots (boondockers), and a dixie cup or baseball hat (if the captain allowed it) for a cover. What do sailors need to be wearing camouflage for, unless they are detailed to a position that requires it. I don't know, call me a traditionalist, but damnit the Navy is steeped in tradition. Things that we did for hundreds of years purely because that's how it's done. It's ceremonial.

Sad to say, but the Marines have the right idea right now with the digital uniforms. The Army is finally putting on their thinking hats and are fixing the problem with better uniforms that actually can be used for concealment. The Navy and Air Force should just stick to traditional uniforms. Sorry to say, but the Navy and Air Force new uniforms just look plain rediculous... Its like a white kid trying to be black and from the hood when he lives in the suburbs..:D lol And by the way, the Army should had stuck with the BDUs and DCUs..

Screw the uniform, I just want to say THANK YOU for serving our country and keeping us all safe!

The most modern and advanced Navy in the world and some people want sailors to wear bell bottoms and cracker jacks.
Maybe we should go back to ships with sails, and 32 pounder guns.

The digital cammo is NOT a tactical uniform, it is so a sailor can work and not have a uniform ruined by a drop of gray paint, dirt, grease, blood, food stains, etc. They require no ironing. They may not look fashionable but they work well.

The new black and tan have eliminated two high maintenance uniforms, summer working whites and winter blues (aka Johnny Cash).
There is no sewn on insignias and they have the creases sewn in and they need very little ironing.

The next thing they need to get rid of is the gay, dress summer and winter jumpers with the bibs, 13 button fly, and neckerchief. That outfit crossed over from "uniform" status to "costume" status after WWII.

But what the hell do I care I have 2 months left in the USN.....

Well, if you're "jumping ship" you probably shouldn't care.

I'd hardly call nearly 8 years of honorable service "jumping ship".
I'm pursuing an equally noble career with the Fire Service; get my degree and enter the reserves as an officer.

Then, Kudo's to you!!

Hoist the B.S. flag there, Matey! Why does the digital uniform include combat boots and bloused trousers? You need to keep ticks and chiggers from crawling up your legs at sea?

You didn't want to wear white in summer? Why'd ya' join the USN? Or didn't you know that goin' in?

WTF. With everybody else going so stylish with the digital cammo, maybe this is the time for the Marines to go back to good old sateens...or better yet - herringbones. Yeah!
