Speeding ticket! Rant

What really get me going when I had out a speeding ticket, is the lies people tell, for example
-driver:I wasn't familiar with the area; I reply:So what your telling me is that if your not familiar with an area you go faster: You should the expression on their face

People have no integrity for their actions.

Take that person who complains about cops. Let him walk up to a car with tinted windows and see what does through his mind as he approaches the vehicle.

This goes out for the person who posted that the trooper is 2 feet from your back bumper in the left lane. My question to is what are you doing driving in the left lane? The left lane is for passing.

I get comments like: Oh, your eating again. I reply:Do you eat?

Don't worry about what everybody else is doing, worry about yourself.

I get people asking me for directions while I am conducting a MV stop. Now people wonder why I am nasty to them, HeyRetard my life is at stake, I don't care about your directions, buy a map, or better yet, know where you are going before you leave.

Or, you have a road closed, police car across the road, flares set up and People still want to go that way. People drive around the baracades, and wonder why you yelling at them.

or people speed in the rain around turns, and I have to be out in the rain for your supidity.

Alot of people have no common sense, and we have to entertain their supidity.

Give us a break, we are out here protecting you. When the **** hit the fan, we can't run, we have to serve and protect. When you are home sleeping at night we are out working. While we sleep during the day, you guys are out mowing lawns, using chain saws. Do you hear us complain, NO. When you home with your families on Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, we are at work, we have no holiday schedule. We are the go to guys whenever someone has a problem. When you get up to go to work, you don't think about if you are going to make it home. You don't have to wear a bullet-proof vest while at work. You don't have to worry if you are out with your family and see a person you locked up getting revenge on you while you are off-duty. Lets see the common person have to take down a person with gun or a knife, the common person will start running the other direction. We are always in the public's eye, someone always has something to says.

Think first before you start complaining.

The pen is mightier than the sword.

When you get that ticket for whatever the violation was, that cop might have saved your life, ie:
-stopped you speeding before that kid ran into the street, or hit that deer on the highway
-stopped for rolling through the stop sign, when a person was in the crosswalk

I could go on and on

People never remember the good things, just the bad.

If a cop doesn't get a complaint on him/her, he/she is not doing their job correctly:

As I always say, "fight the ticket". He busted you fair and square, but I will always fight the ticket.

Here in Colorado Springs, Colorado our police force has been reduced to nothing more than an income generation force for the city coffers. There... I said it for the whole world to see it.

With this openly stated I'll go even further! We voted down their intentions to build a larger court system, and a jail expansion. Yes! The people have spoken! We told the city planners "No! We don't want it! We refuse your desire to jail more of the population, and to extract even more money from our community.

In the mean time we have two police helo's flying over our city 24/7. When they fly over my house I find myself having momentary flash backs to my early days in the military.

I find myself asking... "Is our city that bad? Are we a carbon copy of Los Angeles? Perhaps the crime is right on up there and we actually require these services?" Perhaps none of you should ever want to move here. The very image of a police state comes to mind.

By the way... the city decided to build that jail expansion, and that additional court space. They said they don't need our approval to do it. In the meantime our ticket generating money creation boyz in blue have met their entire monetary total for last year as of early June. They are going to have a diamond income year for 2003.

Don't worry... they intend on filling up that jail, and those court rooms. You'll find me there when I get my next ticket. They refused to acknowledge my vote when I said "No!" I'll be damned if they get my next dollar without their wasting valuable county time, dollars, and that police officer's free time. He'll have his/her rear end in that court room spending time with me instead of gaining additional dollars for the city coffers.

gnxt -- i hear you - but no one that doesnt live the job will ever have a clue

does anyone ever hear of the government giving out grants to cities or states for the actual enforcement of crimes ? every few months our city gets a new grant to pay officers overtime to work radar enforcement- or to fund crackdown on seatbelt law violators-- the ohio state highway patrol are contantly having a crackdown on traffic violators under the gize of reducing accidents

in big cities the police are so undermaned that calls for service stack up hours behind - in big cities regular patrol oifficers dont have time to write people tickets- they have to take care of domestic disturbances - regular disturbances - man with a gun, man with a knife ,burglaries in progress and after the fact , robberies, in progress and after the fact, drug related disturbances, shootings, stabings, beatings, patrolling for crimes before they happen, suicides in progress or after they happened , barricaded psychos, unbarricaded psychos, barricaded sane people, traffic accidents, missing children, missing adults -------its a shame we cant change the primary goals of these officers and their administrators from collecting taxes to one of protecting citizens everywhere from the crimes mentioned above-

im sure this would go miles further toward everyones safety and would also be a much larger tax cut than any the government currently has tried to pass

Here in broward county they have over 800,000 tickets a year that are disputed. Since this is a big # they have set up a system where you appear in front of a majistrait (sp?). Just like a court case, but not a real judge. You plea to him. You can plead "no contest" and he gives a reduced "sentance". If you wish you can plead not guilty and then go on to court. The Maj's job is to reduce the courts workload, so they usually give you a pretty good deal. I'd say 95% of all disputed tickets are reduced and never make it to court. Most of the time its "no points" and court costs of $20-100 depending on the infraction. Hence my statement "always fight the ticket. The city/county gets some money, but you don't get any points on your licence.

Isn't it bloody wonderful the way politicians listen to the voting populace until they're in power?
Same crap goes on up here.
Damned ,lying "Nazis".

That's what I call a factless accustaion, can you back this statement up with facts? I can only speak for what I personally see and know what calls are taking place at the time. I have not seen any partner speeding over 5 mph while casually driving on patrol. I personally lead by example and use my turn signals, headlights and obey the speed limit everywhere within a few mph, human error and speedo inaccuracy is always a factor.

I have personally seen it - I have several close friends that are cops. I also question your honesty about the 5mph comment. Almost all traffic travels more than 5 over the limit and if you hold the T/TA at WOT for just a few seconds you are most likely doing more than 5 over.

Some do and some don't but there's no question this happens. But you must know only about 1/2 of those exceeding the posted limit pulled over for speeding actually get ticketed for speeding. And as a point of fact, not everyone who gets stopped for drunk driving gets hauled off to jail, unless they're totally BLOTTO or with mulitiple offenses. There's a lot more descretion on violations that you're making out.

I was making no comment about discretion. I have been let off many times and I don't hold it against the man if I'm written a ticket for something I was doing - I will still go to court and hope that I can get out of it, but I am playing by the rules established by the man.

Now lets hear some facts about your "1/2 of the people" comment. Also include the % of police that are actually ticketed.

People complain about "harassment" (tickets) much more than those who've been let off. Keep in mind professional courtesy is extended in almost every profession. If you work for GM or car dealer you get a car discount, if you work for a mortgage company or bank you get a better interest rate or discount on application fees cops don't, if you work for a boat dealer you get discounts on boats and related parts, get what I'm saying. Point is, every profession/job has it's perks....life isn't fair but it's reality. Granted there are some on patrol who ticket "their mother" so not all with badges automatically get let off. Those days are past. Again, you hear ONE SIDE OF THE STORY!

Yeah, but so far the other side of the story is BS! I know because I have seen the other side in more cases than I care to list here.

It is also important to note that there is a BIG difference between an employee discount and breaking the law!!! An employee discount is not a violation of the law.

And of course people that have been let go are not going to complain - Is that such a mystery?

"Selective enforcement" is NO violation of the law, it's descretion unless you can prove otherwise.

Anyway, I've gone to great lengths to explain away your accusations. I'd like to hear FACTS regarding yours.

Does the clarify things?

Selective enforcement is grounds for a law to be void - usually found in homeowners association problems where one person is found guilty of something like parking a work truck on the grounds and at the same time others are left alone for the same offense. In such a case, the violation would be dismissed.

Since this is not a court room, I do not have to prove anything. I believe I could prove that a cop is more than 95% likely to not get a SPEEDING ticket in the same situation where a citizen would be more than lets say 75% chance of getting the ticket.

Your so called great lengths seem to be falling a bit short and lacking the FACTS that you call for from the other side.

If I see a car go past me and it's speeding and I stop it, I just enforced the speed limit law. I mean, I stopped someone who was speeding, right? Now, whether I let it go with a verbal warning, a written warning, a ticket or an arrest is simply a matter of my discretion. Anything so far isn't a punishment because that would come after the appearance at court with some determination of guilt.

As far as proving percentages is concerned, I would be very interested in seeing that. You make such a broad statement. Would you be applying that to the entire nation, or a smaller region? How in the heck would you actually measure a percentage like that anyway?:D  :D  :D  :D

I would not agree with your percentages applying to NC. I could believe them being applied to Maryland. IMO there are so many factors that you would have to weigh, I can't see how anyone in there right mind would be able to come up with arguable criteria that would produce a reliable percentage factor...

What is your gut feeling?

If you are white and stop 1000 cars and write 500 tickets and every ticket is written to a black - I believe it would be a problem if that became public knowledge. I'm talking about more than just stopping the car.

As far as the numbers I said that I believe I could prove - that is if an experiment were conducted. Such as to plot out a course that takes a cop (with no police ID) on a journey from, lets say NY to FL with side street action in every state. Have the car doing 20 over the limit - record the tickets and the let-goes.

Now do the exact same thing except with FOP tags and the cop flashing the badge (or as I have heard so often: You may notice I am armed, just a courtesy, I have my service weapon in the car).

On the second trip, the driver would have to keep going until a similar number of contacts were made. Of course the more miles and more departments that were encountered (larger sample) would serve to provide a more powerful and representative numbers.

BTW: The only cop I know that has be written a ticket got it in NC:eek:

Well, sorry about the ticket.. I always bring an arsenal of things with me whenever I drive one I can't live without is my Escort Passport 9500ix Radar, I have owned Passports since about 7 years ago and have not gotten a ticket since, I used to own an 02' Pontiac WS6 T/A Procharged and then I thought I was the bull in the pastor with the biggest nut$, I was coming back from MO and decided It was night and late I stopped at a Love's fueling station and that's where my love affair came to light. I purchased a passport 8500 and installed it in a matter of seconds, soon after that I was doing a 150 on the highway in OK, my radar went off and I slowed down to legal speed limit of 55, a few miles later there he was hiding behind a concrete beam, I think I would still be in jail had I gone without it. since then I have owned 3 of them and have saved me a lot of money, no more tickets, no more judges, no more worries. The last time I had a citation and contrary to what people think.. I didn't fight the ticket is a battle with a cat chasing mouse situation.. you get caught be a man/woman and deal with consequences.. just my .02
