no second gear.....shifts from first to third

My '87 T shifts from first gear to third....skips second. When I try to shift manually or downshift maually second gear acts like neutral until I rev it up then it's at the top of fist gear. Is it time for a new tranny or is there a simple (cheaper) fix?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Jim

My un-educated guess would be the band is burnt/gone and if so then time to see Bruce or Greg for a rebuild or rebuilt one.
