Need help to get serpentine belt back on

I just put a new A/C compressor on. I feel stupid, but the adj. pully only seems to adjust one way, tighten. It only moves upward, what am I doing wrong. The Alternator only moves up and doen about a half inch. I have about an inch to get the belt over and on the alt. pully. What's the trick?

Put a wrench in the idler (tension) pulley and pull up, the belt goes underneath it, you may have it threaded wrong... just a thought.

If it was not removed, there is a belt routing picture under the hood.... think it's near the radiator on the support.
