That'll get you high 11s and a tore up unibody where the rear suspension attaches. You can tell just how hard one was run by that. But it is fun rowing the gears and taking peoples money with one set up like that.

Where did you find those used parts for those prices back in '87?

You didn't.

If you dont mod the cars, the cost of ownership is negligible.

Once you start trying to break(race) the car, the costs go up exponentially. Like any hobby.. golfing, hunting, fishing, etc.. they all have cheap and expensive sides. The faster your trying to get the car to go, the increase in risk and expense.

The car is way way cheaper than going to the Casino or putting things up your nose or in your arms.

Dont mess with the Bull.. you'll get the horns.

Don't for get back then parts were
Half what they are now

Even Kenny bell had
Stage package kits for the gn
Cheep.
( t stat , cold air , chip )
Was a stage 1 if I remember.
Was like $250 bucks.

but wast 250 then a lil steep? and thats back when 12 sec cars were fast. just goes to show you how things change. higher mph higher the price. Keeping the car stockish is not necessarily cheap -stockish meaning chip pump hot wire basics.. but when at that level things such as coils and modules are really the only expensive things maintenance wise. it all boils down to budget. W my first gn I had no $ and parts seemed really expensive. My job is better and now I dont mind it so much. heads are still same price i just have more flex now lol. as stated above it all depends on what car and condition it was in when bought. but like anything if you want 9 sec performance on a 13 sec budget than maybe this car hobby of ours is not there for you yet.

Really now! !!
In 85 when the 5.0 mustangs
Started hitting the seen and being modded
With the worst brakes in the world on a performance car. They were in every junk yard
And used parts were worth a dime a dozen.
Deer park ave (231)
Hempstead turn pike
Flat bush ave
* big races.big money.tons of used parts * mid 80's early 90's
So please if u don't know what your talking about . Dont make comments u have no clue about

This^^^^ is what I'm doubting you on.

I don't think you got a wet kit (filled) in 87 for $250, I'm betting it would have cost you much more.

As for slicks, if you wany to trust your safety @120 plus on some "Oh yeah, these babies are practically new", dried out, 4 year old Craigslist used tires, by all means, have at it sport. But please, stay outta my lane, OK? :)

And since you're the the only guy around here who's opinion and experience has any credibility, I don't have a problem acquiecsing to the King.

Perhaps we will meet at a track or (god forbid) a little street get together someday, and we can let the cars settle it.

Good luck in the future.

Not disputing or supporting either view, in Houston(by the streets that's what I'm guessing) there was a very healthy(or unhealthy depending on your view) street racing culture in that time period. Lots of pretty wicked "street cars" roamed the streets just like Chicago. This leads to a big used market for go fast parts.
I know up here in the metroplex, street racing was live and well back then and used parts could be had as people upgraded.
I know of several high eleven mustangs from the area in that time period that swept up on some unsuspecting victims. And a black(or other color) Buick with a veesix well let's just say if I couldnr line up someone, putting my girlfriend behind the wheel made for an easy target until it showed em some taillights.
Great stories. I wish we could have a streetrace from back in the day stories thread.

U can believe what u will
Asfar as dry rotted tires. Lol
Man back then they were only
140 new each with mount and balance . I worked in a tire shop
And n.o.s was $2 - 4 bucks a pound
Race fuel was only a few bucks a gallon .

I remember the days of cheap gas and tires well, I started driving when gas was 48 cents a gallon.

I just didn't see cheap go fast parts (at least where I lived) become available until the very early 90's.

The fact remains that $1000 worth of bolt on's back then would net you a pretty fast Fox Body or Turbo Regal and they were and still are a kick in the pants to drive. No matter the cost. :D

Ive owned a GN since buying one new in August of 1987. The average Turbo Regal was a heavy Gn running low to mid 14s. The average Mustang was a heavy GT running high 14's to low 15's. And as the mods started the numbers went down from there.

In all my years of street racing back then I never once saw a Mustang Sedan stripped with a 150 shot on an otherwise stock Mustang. I'm sure there was one or two out there but not enough to mean anything.

A stripped down Regal T with a 150 shot will still beat a stripped down Mustang Sedan with a 150 shot.

What is stock? The rare felpro blue head gasket option? 3.55, 3.73, 4.10 gears? Bumping the timing? Short belt?
Same can be said for the Regal.
Crankin up the boost?
Ported heads?
3.90 gears?
KnN filter?
Crushing a fpr to up the fuel pressure?

It was all done, all claimed stock.
Great times.
