I'm partially thinking of possibly becoming a police officer. I was wondering if anyone here is a police officer?

I know that it's an added plus if you have a degree in law. And that you have to go to a police academy. What all did you learn, what type of courses did you go through? What police department do you work for? What kind of benefits do you get? What is your pay like? Do you feel like you are giving something to the community for which you work for?

Would you suggest becoming a police officer?

Forget the cop stuff unless you really like donuts, seriously become a fire fighter, work 24 hours on, 48 hours off.

I wouldnt suggest becoming a cop since all the dorks that came cops i went to school wit are total asses now. One of em gave me a ticket!! what the hell!? besides, theres too many of em now, esp. round here. Theyre supposed to protect the public, not bust people for stupid stuff to fill their quotas. Hope this starts major flames!!!

WakkoSS is a cop, Captin Mark is a cop, and i think TTA 1223 or something like that is a cop...

im doing the fire fighter thing ;)

Firemen

Become a firefighter because if Ohio is like NYC. It a second job for them. Couple of 24 hours shifts (2 days) and off the rest of the week. You could work another job. NYPD doesn't have tours like FDNY you have to make appearances.
You have to have thick skin to make it to retirement in law enforcement.

To The guy who said being a Fireman in NY in FDNY is like having a second job , the reason guys work a side job is because we are underpaid . And just because i do 24hr shifts it still adds up to 40 hrs a week anyway . If you think being an FDNY fireman is a piece of cake then i suggest you take the test and find out . Because bottom line ..its not and the guy who just got killed a few days ago in a job ( Fire) is testiment to that fact . Yeah whe have some perks and it is a great job but it has a real big darkside to it too. P.S i was a cop too for 5yrs in NYC so be there and done that to . Id take FD over PD anyday . Proud to be FDNY !

I said it a second job since FDNY is able to do mutuals. Without that it would not be as nice. Underpaid- that's an understatement. There hasn't been a raise to bring to the bank since Dinkins. Rudy caused damage to the unions and did not give raises.
No one said it was a piece of cake. You said take the test and find out- it take a special breed to be in law enforcement or a firefighter for 20 plus years. Your not suppose to go to work and worry about not going home!

Yeah! Plenty of revenue from writing lots of tickets for them smart a$$ civilians.

Suggest you be a fireman if you really want to do something that gives to the community. ;)

Sorry Artie , theres been alot of Fireman bashing lately and i thought thats what you getting at . :p

One of em gave me a ticket!!

Hey PhilM I told him to give you that ticket.:p

Merry Christmas.:D

I have been a Police Officer in Austin Texas for just over 6 years. I have always wanted to be one since being a kid. The larger departments have their own academy's. The Austin PD academy is 6 months long (longer than the FBI academy). I have a bachelors and masters degree in criminal justice. The degree's help for advancement purposes. I promoted to detective a year ago and now work in the major traffic investigations unit. I love the job. It has its down sides but I could not imagine doing anything else. And you MUST have thick skin (the donut jokes never stop being funny). What is really nice is the pension. Our retirement is 23 years but as soon as we build up enough $ in the system, we will go to a 20 year retirement. Pay is good in Austin. I think we start officers at around 40k. I make a little over 60k and that is without overtime. I have friends that make around 100k with OT. Lot's of perks too (take home cars, HUD homes, courtesy apartments, etc). Let me know if you have other questions.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

Firefighters get more chicks than cops and they have better schedules, 24 on 48 off or in Boca Raton, 24 on and 72 off. I didn't go that route cause I can't deal with medical stuff and trying to help someone with their face ripped off.

Police work is different for every city and every department. I can give you generals about mine, and someone else will give you generals about theirs and both will be completely different. I'm sure this thread will turn into another cop bashing thread or similar, so if you really want to find out my own personal viewpoint, PM me and I'll go through direct email or better yet, a phone call.

I'm trying to get on the Quincy, MA PD after the 2005 civil service test. I live in a small town near quincy and need to change residency so i can get that preference. Its unfortunate that eveyone here is bashing cops. Yeah there are bad apples in every city and town but i know a lot of cops who are great people. It's appealing to me because it gives me a chance to work wiht the public and have a positive influence on people. Making traffic stops is just part of the job. Don't be stupid and get pulled over, test n tune on the track or on a road where cops cant hide. The donut stereotype is a classic, but more and more cops these days are in beter shape. I'm 5'8 165 and i can bench 225 and squat 320, and can run the 1.5 mile in 11 min. The kid was just looking for advice guys, no need to sh*t on the boys in blue. If we didn't have police, than you and your families wouldn't be nearly as safe. Maybe where you all are from police arn't respected as much as they are here in Mass. Anyways, the FD is also a great job, not something i'm interested in but i give nothing but support and the utmost respect for FD personell. That guy who was asking the questions.... feel free to contact me, i've been through a couple application proceses and am up to 60 college credits in criminal justice. MERRY CHRISTMAS!

I've been a cop in a rural MI county for 7 years. I had an interest in police work that surfaced occasionally enough that I decided that I would try it so at the least I would never have to wonder about it again. I ended up liking it and will probably retire from it-although I sometimes wonder why I do it.
The pay here isn't anything special but pays the bills; it's probably above average wage here. The benefits are decent. Once one gets time/seniority cop jobs are USUALLY secure and steady.
I only have an associate degree in CJ. Many Depts. now require a bachelors degree. This, however, doesn't have to be in CJ. I would study something else if I went for more schooling. That would enable me to get into something else if something happened where I couldn't do this any more. (CJ degrees are largely useless after that)
The best thing with my job is I am pretty much my own boss. I have no command Officers on my night shift so I do what I want, when I want. This area is small enough that there is enough down time between complaints to allow for investigations or traffic work. We do all our own crime scenes (evidence) and follow-up investigating. Traffic is a filler during routine patrols.

Police work has variety and can be challenging. Investigations are fun. They're fun because they're challenging. They're challenging because every p.o.s. you deal with lies and "didn't do nothin' wrong". It's up to you to secure facts to prove the truth (you already know). There's a tremendous amount of legal crap to know so you can make quick, proper, decisions.
As others pointed out, you need to have thick skin-this can be developed with time. Look how otherwise decent people here cry about tickets they have gotten. (whether with good reason or not) Now imagine how a p.o.s. cries about what the POlice do to him ("for no reason"). You'll learn to laugh complaining off and even welcome it.
Is it rewarding? My area is largely anti-cop [it had the highest per-capita alcohol consumption of anywhere in the nation for 2 years, widespread drug use, high unemployment, a casino(lots of fraud)-you get the picture.] It can be rewarding but you need to find your own rewards. Don't expect a pat on the back. If you want to be loved, be a fireman. [If you're thinking about that, talk to one-their job is a LOT more than spraying water] Policework isn't about leading a lost kid home by the hand. It's about seeing people at their worst, seeing into their private heII.
You'll have to remember that you only deal with a few percent of the people, over and over. Most people only encounter police through simple traffic stops or traffic crashes. MANY people have NEVER had contact with the police. They are the ones to remember that you serve. COPS (the TV show), as much as I laugh when I (rarely) see it, will actually give you an idea what to expect. Policework is largely the same across the country, same loser, same trailer park, etc., no matter how large or small the city. Smaller towns don't, however, have the quantity of violent crime, although small cities (under 10,000 pop.) led the listing for officers killed in the last 10 years. Large cities(over 250,000 pop.)close behind. I hope I'm not sounding too negative as you will meet lots of good people you wouldn't otherwise have contact with and occasionally can have a profound, positive effect on someone's life (makes it worthwhile.)

Bottom line here, benefit:freedom. Down side: lots off as5holes.
I'll quit b4 this gets too long but can answer questions you (or anyone) have. I might even respond to ticket talk if I get time-since I have been on the receiving end of this job many times in the past.

Being a Police officer is not all that bad of a job as every one sees it. My father was a Baltimore City officer for 25 years and now is working for a local law enforcement agency, it sure runs in the family blood because I am following in his foot steps. I started as a Security Officer at a Antique market and now I am a Public Safety Officer so I find my self advancing as time go's on. But if you wanna go into this line of work you might want to consider Security, I know it's not glorious but hey it gets you a start! Good luck!

Wow Lots of LEO s in here . I have been a Police Officer for 9 going on 10 yrs.For the last 5 I have been a Field Training Officer . This job has to be in your blood to do this or you wont last long. If you have any questions e mail me directly.;)
