popped head gasket

Popped headgasket yesterday can't understand why. No know issues low boost 22 once but mostly under 18. Oil full of water and tinybit of antifreeze ussually Run water and wetter. Is it because I have street tires and show knock on initial tire spin? Is the system not fast enough to keep up? That's the only time I got knock. I flushed the motor then ran I'll thru it 2 more times with a primer. The oil was slightly grey at first but now its normal on the last drain. Should I get commetics or o ring the heads and run victors. I know I need stickies. When did 3rd gear pulls I never saw k o'clock and the 6.0 chip always showed 10.7 a/f.
 
In signature. Alky and 6.0 chip. All the time. All on 6.5 and a/f runs at 10.7. Get knock when tires spin up to fast
 
What was timing and how did you verify it?
 
This could be a stretch, but..... During tire spin your load (LV8) will drop fast and low (usually), and this could have caused the timing to spike too high.

What cylinder?

What does the plug look like on that cylinder. Any "peppering?" on the porcelain? When you detonate the piston can lose of its aluminum.. it will show up on the plugs porcelain. If plugs are clean, I would triple check head surfaces for being flat. Especially on the cylinder that failed.

Had a local guy pop a gasket and his block was missing the dowels on the lower bolts. Only mention this becuase its a built motor and you need to go through everything since there is no log of when it happened.
 
Run some compression & leak tests... I betcha it's one/both of the forward cylinders...

PS- You have to know that your A/F ratio is an "average" of all six cylinders. It doesn't tell you which is fat or lean. A little investigation and you'll know though...

I am interested to know what plenum & T-B you're running...?

did a compression test and they are all 160ish

didnt see no peppering on plugs they look pretty white though

trying to type with greasy hands this sucks. will have them off this weekend. i am hoping it is an intake leak an not the heads but i think i blew the corner coolant passage and left the ring intact. the wird thing is i had no oil out breathers and the motor is quiet and smooth. all i have left is turbo, valve covers intake and headers.

i am running a ported stock plenum from khai and stock throttle body
 
Sorry to here this Brian. What head gaskets are you running? Head studs?

victor reinz and thanks it does suck just stated to have fun with this roller tranny and poof. i cant win build a stroker with hard parts then bust a tranny. then have it built to only last 20 miles snapping a forward drum and twisting splines on slip yoke. then order all billet and roller parts and have it built to now popping a headgasket. its a viscious cycle

What did you use to seal your head studs/bolts?
i used permatex 2 on studs with gm tablets. weeped for 10 min on first start. when this happened it dumped the whole radiator in oil pan
 
I feel your pain & know all about the vicious cycle! Mine was running great then popped a head gasket. Gotta find time/energy to get it back together.

Always said cometic in the past but have recently found RJC to be a better choice for a 109 with 8 head bolts. IMO cometics can leak combustion through the layers of gasket sacrificing gasket material or worse your aluminum heads. They don't blow like a normal hg. They start to leak in one area causing a blow torch effect. You end up with this partially blown hg that leaks only under pressure. They can run that way for while showing no real signs of a problem until one day it torches the casting. Then your done.
Just not enough clamping with 8 head bolts.

Go with RJC bullet proof. Follow the installation procedure closely. Glue them down for good.

I agree with rick the RJC's are the way to go but follow ALL steps. Thats why I went to a 14 bolt block and heads don't want this problem LOL and the price is right
 
We have used both Cometics and RJCs. BUT we only run steel heads. Alum heads would make the car to fast :p ANYWAY... RJCs we used didn't blow.. Just ate a piston instead :biggrin: Obviouslly had a tuning "issue" with the car. 27k on the car!! Good point on the Cometics as far as alum heads.. I could never understand how guys were torching them !!
