wheel offset?

I've read and looked at diagrams describing wheel offset but I'm still confused about it.

It seems to me that offset is a direct result of backspacing, if you change backspacing you change offset and vice versa.

Is that true?

It is my understanding that they are similar. Offset is the distance from the mounting surface to the centerline of the wheel. This means a zero offset puts the mounting surface right at the center of the wheel. Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface to the inside lip of the wheel.
