When I saw the video of the wipeout I was shocked. I dont see how the Olympic @ssholes can continue the event on the same track and claim that it was rider error but also state they will make a few changes to the track to make it safer. If it was up to me that entire event would be eliminated. The sport sux anyway. How much of an athlete do u need to be to ride down a hill on a tiny@ss sled in 80's stretchpants.

The guy was in the AAA league & not in their class of sliders so shouldnt have been allowed to run. As for How Hard is IT?? Ask the AAA guy thats Dead! Obviously takes some skill!

Can't figure why they had steel columns right next to the track??? He would have had half a chance if he didn't hit an immovable object.

accident

Don't really know how to respond to this post without offending someone, especially this man's family, but many athelet's have perished participating in their chosen sport. Boxers, Nascar (there are quite a few in this category).
Luge appears to be a very dangerous sport, ice is very, very hard and a collision with is bound to produce a bad day. Anyway, just an opinion from an old man.

From what I heard there were many seasoned racers saying the track is to fast for years. I guess most tracks run in the 80mph or so range but this one is 90+. They are starting down from the orginal top to slow them down some but still saw some last night that were 90mph or so. I'm sure is takes plenty of skill and balls to go that fast and not wipe out. He was an experience rider and his Dad was a champion rider, he wasn't bush league. The designer of the track should have taken into account the chance of someone going out where those columns are. They are just plain stupid but the real culpable villians are the officials that didn't slow the track down before someone got killed.

I bet you couldn't do it

I did not see the video but here's my take on it.

We all adults and know right from wrong. The luge rider should've know the risks. The other riders complained it was a fast track. If the other riders thought it was too fast, then don't go down plain and simple.

We are always looking to blame someone but ourselves.

only thing I can add is that he died doin something he was devoted to. :frown:

Agreed, but at 90 mph at some point he was gonna hit something w/ less give than him. I hate that someone died, but at the top of that slope they all chose to push off or turn around. Call it brave, or foolish, just call it their decision.

Also I heard Canada was the only country to have any real practice time. Everybodyelse had to learn the track with just a few runs

I saw the video but it seems that all of them have been taken off youtube now? From what I saw a simple plexiglass wall like in hockey rinks would have saved his life. The spot where he flew up off the track had a bunch of huge concrete pillars two feet from the track & was at the end where speed is the greatest. Safety precautions are important in every sport & this design is ridiculous. If there was a simple wall there he would have hit it, fell back on the ice & slid on his butt, living to try again.

I agree!

they did build a plywood wall there after the crash.
but those guys are insane- the only people more insane than them in the olympics are the people that do the same thing, only head first.. i forget what that event is called.

...Water Slide Mod...

I was talking to a guy earlier today about this and he suggested making the track look like a water park slide, where the slide is completely inclosed. That is just too good of an idea to be used by a luge track designer. That would probably keep track conditions more stable during competition (from a wind perspective) and it eliminates the ejection issue entirely. My guess is that will never happen because they couldnt televise the run as well if the track had a roof, so the fans of luge (and there are sooo many out there) wouldnt be able to appreciate the high skill level required to steer right, then left, then right again. As far as me doing a lil luge action... not gonna happen but I will say this, with enough practice time just about anybody could get down a luge course. I wouldnt be the fastest but Im sure even the best in the world sucked when he first started. I call that the Danica Patrick Theory....Stick around long enough and eventually u get pretty good at something. It took her forever to win a race in an open wheel car...But eventually she won. Lets see how long it takes for her to just finish a race in the top 20 with the crazy @ss hillbillys of NASCAR!;)

Use plexiglass or lexan so you can still see. All they really need is taller walls in the tricky spots. And of course no exposed concrete pillars at the edge of the track:eek: In the video I saw last night the morons kept commenting on how he hit an un-padded pillar:confused: Padding would not help in this case, you needed a wall to keep lugers off the pillars entirely.

the problem is not speed, you hit a metal pole at 70mph or 90mph it makes no difference your still dead

Completely stupid that they have exposed metal poles they have since installed a wall over them which is what should have been done in the first place

Not a fan of it but its up to them when they get on the track just like us, Lots of people die everyweek at drag race tracks but we still go lol. Thank God my rear axle broke on lauch a while back and not half way down the track . Scary to think about. Daniel Ray
