What happened here?

Hard to say if the pressure spike happened after the KABOOM, or before it...

I was going to mention that time frame. Could have been a backfire that spiked the MAP like that. Probably what broke the crank. Plus, it looks lean for running alky!

I joined the club back in April 2001, 5000 rpm, 22#'s boost, pump gas. I broke everything but the head castings and intake. Converter bent, front cover cracked, never found 2 connecting rods (they were turned into powder I think), trans housing in multiple pieces. I looked under the car and saw a cam lobe sticking sideways out of the side of the oil pan.

Thanks for sharing.

The a/f is a little richer than stated as the fuel energy constant is still at 1.0.

Also running 16lbs boost and 23 degs timing...been running fine with no knock for quite a while.

Holy crap Shawn! that sucks man I am sorry to see that......I suppose that is why you called me last night....sorry I missed your call.

That is some serious carnage.......I have broke an engine like that but not a Buick....it was a 455 Pontiac.

I am curios to know what failed.....I would not think that much damage would arise from a 17-18 psi pull unless that 26 psi spike happed prior to the break!

It could be that something was hurt and or weak prior to that pull.....that engine has been together 10 years and lots of track pulls......

I'm sorry man thats rough I do know what it feels like.....gimme a shout when you got some time.

Thanks man and all who have responded. It does suck, but opens up a great opportunity to build another. This one lasted over 10 years, used to drive it to Bowling Green 1000 miles, bolt slicks on and run high 10s low 11's, bolt street tires back on and drive 1000 miles home. It did well.

I swear it felt like the transmission bell housing broke, then took out the engine...transmission in all twisted and stuff. Fun.

Dang!

Sorry to hear this. Hope you get it back up and running soon.

Mike Barnard

More carnage!

Maybe the transmission shop that installed the front pump and converter 1 week before this, had a mishap with the ds align dowel upon install and cracked the housing?..?..?
