Turbo removal question...

I want to remove the turbo to check out the oil lines, etc... and to eventually replace the turbo or have this one rebuilt. Just wondering if I should drain the oil out of the engine prior to removing the turbo, since there are a pair of oil lines going to it I don't want to end up losing oil all over the place when I can just drain it out...

You could also remove the inlet pipe and check for traces of oil, but do you have breather on the pass valve cover? The top of the turbo is the oil feed line and the one on the bottom is the return line.

Hi Sam:

You shoudn't have to drain the oil. No pressure in those lines until car is running.

Just make sure that when you replace, you use an original GM gasket on the return line. I didn't and ended up having to change the gasket due to leakage. The GM gasket fixed 'er right up.
