I am not really up on Electronics

my kids have all thier Game systems hooked to our TV backside

Problem is not enough ports & the TV is huge to move to keep switching cables to use my VHS/DVD player.. ( I know I am Old School)

I noticed an SVIDEO port on tv & my dvd player.

Hooked it up but only get video display NO SOUND?
Is this true with this type of cable?

Yes, you need an audio connection now, some times the front of the TV will also have connections.

S video supports more lines of resolution, 650 if I'm not mistaken. Regular analong is 5 something I believe. Audio is not carried on that line unlike the HDMI. Get an A/B switch. I did that for years with my old TV and video game. There is also the Component which splits the video in 3 cables and the 2 audio with RCA plugs.

Let the kids use the s-video and use the component (red/blue/green) on your DVD if its a progressive scan or better.

..

RCA, S-video are analog signals. Component and HDMI are digital signals, I believe.
All except for HDMI will require seperate audio connections
