Are you trying to install a tach? If so, there is a factory lead behind the alternator that you can tap into for your tach signal. It's the green connector with two wires. Not the black connector with one wire, as that is the fuel pump test lead.
Typically on Autometer tachs, you will need to clip/cut the looped brown wire for V6 use.

...and if you're not, the Scanmaster gets all of it's info from the ECM

Unless you have a powerlogger, then it gets it's info from the ECM plus a few external outputs you can input yourself.
