For stock bore applications, are "any" forged pistons better than factory or are there some that I should stay away from?

Stock crank and rods.

Just something I can push over 400hp with valve train/heads done and not have to worry
 
They would have to be a forged piston for a turbo application. 400hp I'd just leave the shortblock alone
 
Would you still suggest leaving the short block alone with 150,000 miles?

If it has good compression and oil pressure I'd change the timing chain and put another 100,000 on it.
 
A healthy stock shortblock will laugh at 400 hp as long as you stay away from detonation...I finally have up on mine, around 600 rwhp it kept cracking the stock pistons...got 3 before I threw in the towel.
 
If I go with stock pistons I'll have to buy new rings. Any suggestions on rings? I'll post pics up of the pistons when I get home. Short blocks already taken apart besides crank

Bought the engine and stripped it down to replace all gaskets. Once i took the heads, off cyl. 6 had what looks to me like block seal. So i figured ill just look into pistons since its completely torn apart, and buy some that i can push over 400hp when im ready to.

Lmk how the piston looks to you guys and maybe ill go with the stock pistons. Appreciate the replies

Ugh, looks like the one was dropped in the mud, would probably have to clean it up to make a determination.

Closely inspect the underside around the pin for cracks.

Looking at the condition makes me more worried about what the bore looks like, inspect it closely you may be forced to bore it and then you will have no choice but to buy pistons.
 
The bore looked good just this 1 piston is what im worried about. Ill check it out tomorrow and try to get pics.

You have it apart. Buy some off the shelf JE replacements. While you probably didn't need to take it apart,it wouldn't be wise to put it back together with stock pistons.
 
I took it apart because I wanted to reduce the chances of anything going bad and having to tear it down again. I've been through that already. Glad I did though. I want my stuff done right from the start. Otherwise I would've just had my grandpa do this. Haha.

Cleaned up the piston a bit. No cracks that I am aware of.
I did check the head gasket out and it was blown....:(

The stock pistons are quite heavy. Since it is apart,it would be a good thing to put some stronger/lighter pistons back in and have the rotating assembly balanced. A couple of steel caps would be worth while also.
