Thought I'd be clever, and bought an oil temp sender that replaces the pan drain bolt. There aren't many around and I guess now I know why. Set the wrench to 30 lb-ft and start turning, hear odd noises, finally the top of the sender snaps off entirely. But the bottom half wasn't even finger tight, I turned it easily and unscrewed it from the pan with my fingers.
So, looks like I'll cut a tee into the hose for the more usual VDO sender.
