No speedo but VSS is fine...

I have an aftermarket gauge package with VDO gauges, cockpit series I believe, and my speedometer quit working after making a "sprung" noise and the needle moving counterclockwise two full turns. My cruise still works fine though and my mph on the scanmaster reads correctly. Because of this, I don't believe the cable is broken. It appears that mechanical VDO gauges are not available. I'm fine going with autometer despite that it won't match my other gauges. Question is, is the VSS a part of this aftermarket speedometer or can I just get a new mechanical gauge and drop it in? Any certain specs I should look for? The only VDO replacement I can find is electic. And of course I have a spare speedo cable but that isn't the problem...

I'd send your mechanical VDO "Cockpit" speedometer out for a rebuild. It can be fixed / repaired easily.

There are several places that do this and are VDO specialists.

North Hollywood Speedo & Clock is one that I have personally used with excellent results. They are in the Los Angeles, CA area.

These guys do great work.

Do a search on them......as it's been covered before.

Good Luck!

The VSS sensor is inline with the speedo cable. Check along the speedo cable...you will find it.

I have a GNX style dash in my car with VDO gauges. It actually has 2 speedo cables as I recall. One longer one between the trans and the VSS and a shorter one from the VSS to the speedo itself. If the second cable failed the VSS would still work but the speedo wouldn't.

I thought the VSS was behind the dash gauge cluster, but still part of the speedo cable going to the speedo. Some cruise control cars have 2 speedo cables, 1 going to the cruise control box then another going from the box to the speedo.

The speed sensor on a stock instrument cluster is an optical sensor counting the revolutions of the speedometer. It's mounted on the back of the speedometer. 83' on down cruise controls were mechanical and they used 2 cables. 84' up use electronic cruise controls.

I think mine is this way. I'll check the small cable tonight. I'm hoping it is just the gauge though. When it sprung, the needle started turning backwards slowly two full turns. If it was the cable, I would think it would have just went to 0. We'll see this weekend I guess. At least the scanmaster still reads mph.

I have the speedo cable with the VSS in line. I don't think I need it yet, but where would a guy get a spare cable, both, and a backup VSS? Or can my cable and VSS be repaired down the road if needed? I have a NOS speedo cable if anyone needs it...

ttt. anyone? Can any speedometer cable just be rebuilt using the old housing? What about the VSS?
