I just put a mini starter from the other Buick site on my car. I turned it over with the module disconnected to listen to it. I can hear the starter slow down on what I think are compression strokes and the immediately return to normal speed. So it has an alternating fast\slow\fast\slow cycle that is audible.
I pushed the starter nose out into the flywheel to check the gap and I think I could stick 5 or 6 paper clips in there easily. It also appears that the starter is only contacting about 1/4 of the way on the flywheel teeth. Is this entirely to far? I put a full width 1/32" shim in it for grins and it makes the starter sound like it doesn't slow down as much, but of course it doesn't help the engagement issue any.
Do I need to shim this sucker to roll it toward the flywheel or get another starter? This is the stock never been out of the car TTA block.
