" excessive amount smoke while driving"
With your foot "in it"? ;)
1.Check the oil. Water in it?.
2.Radiator have bubbles in it?
3.Coolant low? Refer to #1.
4.Smoke: White or blue? White = hg. Blue =oil.
Blue smoke could be the turbo has failed.
5.Ticking noise: Head gasket blown outward.
6. Wastegate stuck shut/inoperative = hg.
IN ANY CASE DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE!
Some checks to make:
Plugs out, check for water.
Downpipe off and check for oil.
Up pipe off check for oil in the intake.
Look closely around the plug side of the heads for head gasket being pooched out.
A compression test should quickly find a blown gasket.
