loud bang on shift wtf was that??

lately ive been trying to get my tranny to shift right..i put it back to the factory setting and i only had 1 notch stickin out towards the firewall and thne my WOT shifts were only at 4,500..so i put it back one mroe notch towards the firewall and it still didn't really seem right..so i put it back one more so for a total of 3 notches stickin out the back towards the firewall..and this morning i took it out and went WOT and it didn't shift an it hit 5,500RPM so i left off the gas an gave it gas again to make it shift and at the shift there was a loud bang..so i left off the gas..an the tranny was shiftin normal under normal driving..i had no Knock at all or anything..but it was kind of scary...anyone know what the heck that could have been?? i didn't go WOT with it again after that lol..i was gonna ask on here first..
