I have a 87 GN with a blown head gasket. I was getting ready to tear down the head when I found out I have head stud. Now I have to pull the motor out. Did the factory use head studs or did someone take this head off before. Also head gaskets some say us Fel-Pro 9441-pt some say only use original GM or should I use GM 2 steel shims and a sealer.

Yes, that engine was probably out before due to having head studs.

Also, I would go with the Fel Pro 9441PTs, they are excellent stock replacements.

Some newer studs come out with an allen wrench.

If not, you could lock 2 nuts together and back them out.

Or like me, just use vice grips and buy new studs with the allen.

yeah, don't pull the engine, you only have to remove the three studs near the heater box, the head will come off, you just have to hold your tounge the right way.

I've done several this way.

If there are no allen head sockets on the studs remove the mounts and drop the engine down carefully on the crossmember and you will gain a lot of room.
