help with avatar please..........

ok, it says your avatar should not be bigger thatn 512 bytes, and size must be 50?x50? or less. WTF? All the avatars I use I can't get down to 512 bytes, and I've seen a TON of avatars on this board that are easily double or triple that size. What is the trick??
