Delay going into reverse

What does it mean when the transmission doesn't go into reverse when you initially put the shifter in reverse? If you just leave it there (in reverse) it suddenly engages after a time (up to about 45 seconds or so max) and moves just fine--no apparent slippage or anything. In drive it engages as expected and moves well.

Do you have a transbrake? If so push the transbrake button when its in reverse.
