Computer gurus - help with compressing an mpeg file?

I've got a 23 mg MPEG file of a race (about 55 seconds long from burnout to boards) - how can I compress it smaller to email or is that even possible? (It's a 12.0 run of an '03 Cobra)

I thought about WinZip but that doesn't seem to do much from what I've seen.

Help?

IMO first thing you need to do is compress it with a codec like divx or something similiar.It will probley cut it down to 1/3 the orignal size and keep most the quality.

MPG is not a compressible file. You will have to change the format to divx

How do I change the format? Are there free downloadable programs to do that?

You mentioned WINzip so I assume its windows? Nowdays most folks are on at least win98 if not XP so....

For win98 Microsoft has a free encoder you can download that will allow you to alter compression on the file.

For winXP, I highly recommend using the built in Movie Maker (upgraded to ver2 for free) to convert it to a WMV file.

Either way, you can most CERTAINLY convert that file.

You need to get virtualdub and divx if you're going to do it my way.

1. Start virtual dub
2. Go to file>open video file and open the file you want to compress
3. Go to Video>compression
4. Select the divx codec from the list and hit ok
5. Go to file>save as avi
6. Now set a file name, let it process, and you're all set
