car is shifting from 1st to drive and it hits hard can any one tell me what is going on

Well..

It could be several things. Just a few would be, 2nd gear band is smoked. Servo pin blew through the anchor. Band anchor broken. 1-2 shift valve stuck.
Does the car run up in rpm then shift at a high rpm into 3rd?
Sounds like a 2nd gear band issue whether it be band, servo pin, anchor on band or anchor in case. BUT you will find it to be a 2nd gear problem.

When you put it i manual 2nd does it shift to second and hold?
Or shift and then slip with throttle apply?

Bet the PSI is down, and the frictions are shot due to it. AT WOT does it shift and hold correctly through all gears?

Do a PSI test. Here is some info

2004R Pressure Test Info
To perform a pressure test on your 2004R is not hard and can supply lots of info if you are having a problem. You will need a 90 deg. fitting 1/8" pipe to -4. You will also need a pressure gauge that goes to 300 psi. The pressure tap is located on the left side of the transmission above the linkage. Typical pressures of a healthy 2004R listed below. I have also listed the minimum required to for decent transmission life. The test should be performed with engine RPM slightly elevated to around 1200 RPM or more. Full TV requires the TV cable to be pulled out as far as it will go. Dont get to hung up on the pressures in Park as some VBs do not boost in Park and some do. The other gears are very important.

Excellent pressure Minimum
