Canada, WTF

Our Prime minister is retiring in a short while . I think he is looking for a spot at the UN. He is sucking up to the UN big time and forgetting that he does not represent every Canadian.( Especially in Western Canada) I am sure you have your share of anti war pinheads in the U.S. also. It just happens that this one is the head of our so called government. The U.S. has always been there for us and I am ashamed of the crap that is coming from our government. Just my personal opinion. If it means anything. If I could change that I would . Just remember, not all Canadians agree with our government, just as all americans are not pro war.

Ditto. It's a friggen joke what our gov't has being saying & doing throughout this whole Iraq thing. They have long forgotten what it means to represent the people who elected them, so please do not hold it aganst us. Blame the a$$hole in Ottawa and his chicken$hit government. They are raping our country while we watch helplessly.

This and other left leaning policies is why I left Alberta 12 yrs ago.

I totally understand what you Canadian folks are saying. I never agree 100% with the things our government does. Especially when we have a liberal President in office. I can easily seperate your politians views from the views of your average person. Canada is full of good folks.

I'VE HEARD PLENTY OF SUPPORT FROM OUR CANADIAN FRIENDS. THERE ARE SOME LEFTYS HERE, AND SOME THERE. JUST SO HAPPENS, THE PRIME MINISTER IS A LEFTY. HE COULD HAVE KEPT HIS MOUTH SHUT AND ALL WOULD BE WELL. BUT ALAS, HE'S A FRENCH THINKER! I ALWAYS FELT AS AN AMERICAN, THAT THE CANADIANS ARE OUR FRIENDS AND I STILL FEEL THE SAME.

Canadian Friends....

Could you help me understand how your govt works during elections?

What I mean is....The US has an Electoral College that gives the sparsely populated States, in "fly over country" where our food is produced, an edge in our national elections. Does Canada have anything like that, or, is it a straight count of the votes?

Of Course, Senator Hillary promised New York that she would "fix" the electoral college situation....NOT! Were it not for the electoral College, Gore, God forbid, would be our President and we'd all be taking Arabic lessons by now....;)

Can't you see? It's an ambush. Sure, Saddam, come to Canada, we won't hurt you. ;-) He would wake up in a hockey rink with NHL's finest lining up for hits. Brought to you by ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports. :)

I think you hit it on the head. Our government Doesn't work.
We've had too many governments, past and present that did whatever they wanted and to he** with the people's wishes.
The reason being is that we have no elected senate.
We still use a British style parliamentary system.
Funny how a country that is trying to break free from British influence, seems to want to hang on to it's style of government.
I guess the dictators[PM's] like the absolute power.
Want some examples?
Blame Bull-Roni[Brian Mulroney] for the Free Trade act.
He stacked the senate with his cronys to pass the bill.
He wasn't going to get the vote,so made up some new senators and put them in place.
He got his way.
Kyoto Proctocol?
Chretin *Ordered* his party to vote for it.
Know what happens if you don't?
Next election you ain't no Liberal.
Have fun you're branded and stand a very good chance of not getting that fat gov't pension.
So now we're stuck with a crud bill, based on flawed theory[not fact],designed to pull more money out of our pockets.
Somebody oughta' send our government a 3 thousand # message.:D :D :D
Oh mother dear?

I know that I am in the minority when it comes to supporting the government in OttAwa. But, I don't mind. As a nation, deciding to remain neutral is our own business... and shouldn't reflect our commitment to North American solidarity. I am a big supporter of the decision NOT to get involved in the fiasco that is the INVASION of Iraq. It is nice to see that our government has the strength and confidence in itself NOT to fall into line with American actions and politics.

In modern day North America it is tough to think for yourself... I am proud that an entire nation, my country, small as it may be, still has the will to stand up and say NO.

God Speed to the people of America in their efforts to support THEIR government's wishes.

I respect your opinion. I am just curious, what is your opinion on Canada's stance to not turn over known terrorists and/or criminals hiding in Canada to the US for trial.

How would you like to be known as the "World's Stool Pigeon"?

I know I wouldn't it...

Canadian's get a bad rap for being passive aggressive, but the moment we make a stand for something we believe in... we are labled as traitors.

I hope this makes sense.

If not, I'll come up with something more definitive. ;)

What, if anything, do Americans get from Canada?

It's a nice place to fish and they have good beer. Nothing wrong with that!

I would respectfully reply that if that be true, it is time for the US to completely close our northern border. It should be considered a way for US enemies to come in and out of our country freely. I feel that Canada should pick their friends wisely. Helping the US seems much smarter than helping terrorists. And deciding to harbor terrorists is not in the best interest of the US OR Canada. Just a thought.

That is the point.
We have chosen our friends well... I don't suspect you always do things your friends approve of, or agree with. Everyone will get over this.
It isn't that we are pleading ignorance to their existence here, they are kept a close watch of... and America knows they are here.

Would you rather them fly in unannounced from overseas? (NPI)

Ever heard the expression: Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer?

America's "intelligence agencies" have shown to be pretty weak when it comes to overseas affairs, militant, and terrorist activity until lately. At least now you know where they are, and can tap into and spy as much as you'd like. You just can't have them... Humanitarian policies and all. ;)

What does the US get from Canada?

I'll start with what does Canada get from the US. We get a lot.

However, most American citizens are under the impression (since Ronald Reagan said it) that Japan or other countries are your largest trading partner. That's incorrect, Canada has been for years by a healthy margin, I am not sure of current standing.

Your current president campaigned partly on the idea that he would solve energy problems by aligning more tightly with Canada and Mexico. He meant Natural Gas and Oil in Canada. Also New York state is powered by Canadian hydro electricity to the point that Quebec Hydro has to ensure service to New York is working before restoring power in Quebec.

Out of interest the Alberta Tar sands contain more oil than all of Saudi Arabia, its just expensive to dig up. Once oil stays at ~$55 US a barrel, Canada becomes the new OPEC. GWB knows that and wants ready access to it.

Our mineral resources are larger than almost any other nation in the world and its also very diverse, its one stop shopping.

Our lumber is of high quality and is cheap, we are putting US mills out of business, hence the large duty slapped on Canadian lumber.

Up until recently every F-Body GM car built came from a now recently closed Quebec assembly plant, nobody worried about it at the time.

Closing the border would put millions of Americans out of work, and obviously at least as many Canadians.

The era of the American economy being vertically integrated is long over (ie. the idea that you are self sufficient in all areas). Canadians have always had their parent companies situated in other countries. To us its always been this way. Americans are just now realizing this has happened to them and want to reverse it. Its too late, you are a part of the world economy, we are all tied to each other like it or not.

As far as economies go, a few years ago Ontario had the 3rd largest economy in North America after California and Texas. Not small potatoes.

Politics

To me its a real problem that we do not have an elected senate. Each Prime Minister hands picks their favourite people and places them in the senate to basically follow party lines. It called a patronage posting. Our senators need only show up for a few hours every month to collect their pay. We had one who spent 2 years in Mexico, setting foot in the senate only a few times yet received full pay. They don't have to retire until age 75.

Our current Prime Minister weilds immense power in the party. Although Canada is a democracy, the indivual parties are not. If you vote against the party line your standing is reduced within the party and you are in the political hinterland. Canada has a tradition of re-electing the same party several times before switching (we have no 2 term limits). During that time Prime Minister Chretien for instance has built up a tremendous dictatorship within his party and it has spilled over into the public service. The right leaning parties are squabbling amongst themselves and do not represent a credible alternative. The Liberals will therefore get elected once more.

To you Americans this means the next PM will be either Paul Martin or John Manley (he looks like Beaker the muppet). Our Liberal PMs rarely get along with the US President in Office. Trudeau and Nixon despised each other. Our Conservative PM, Brian Mulroney got along famously with Ronald Reagan however. Both Manley and Martin are quite different from Chretien (Chretien was high up in the Trudeau governments). They will want to mend fences with the US. Chretien is old and doesn't care what others think so he makes no effort with GWB. Paul Martin is a wealthy business man and will do what makes sense monetarily so he would be a step up for sure. John Manley is a very conservative Liberal. My money is on Manley. You heard it here first.

Ultimately Canadians and Americans are more alike than different. Please distinguish between the Candian Government's (read: Jean Chretien) position and that of the Candian public. There are people on both sides of all these issues as there are in the US.
