Can someone please explain V band clamps to me

I'm thinking of doing a turbo LSX motor in my car and see a bunch of people are having V bands welded on the headers and turbos, how do these work and what are the advantages.
 
Once installed it is easier to take parts on/off for servicing, looks nicer IMO and seals better IMO

Also no gaskets are used so no more gaskets to worry about blowing/leaking out.

V bands are commonly used in the aviation industry.
