i have 87 gn motor to convert my 85 turbo t to 87 drivetrain will my 85 tranny work with the 87 motor

It will work fine. You will need the 87 detent cable.

I was told I would need a new one, before I did the swap. I am very hardheaded and thought they were the same. So I tried using the old one. I couldnt get the 85 cable to connect to the TB linkage or something like that, or couldnt get it to draw enough slack out of the detent cable through the adjuster????

Something along those lines.

Hmm.. I have a brand new 85 cable on it now and an 87 on my workbench. The 85 cable hooks up the same, and the slack seems right.. I guess I'll find out when i drive the car and the shifts are out of whack...
