what actually happens if the cam sensor fails or is failing? i just happened to throw out years worth of mags, and high tech perf. had an article on them.ive got a tapping sound going and an ex buick mech. said it sounded like the cam was going flat. the car doesnt have a smooth idle,it sounds like a top fuel v6. runs very rich,if you put a long pry bar on the cam sensor and rev the motor you get a nice loud tapping sound right to your eardrum.wtf?

It sounds like the top bushing in the cam sensor is worn but I think you may have other issues. Did you check the cam sensor timing?

Cam sensor is used to sync up #1 injector. After the car starts, you can unplug it and motor will continue to run. As the computer then uses the crank sensor after it starts.

If you spun the position, the car can backfire while trying to start.. but of it runs bad.. more than likely you have something else.

A wiped cam is common.. but removing valve covers and spinning engine over is the easy way to tell if thats the problem by looking at the rockers and how much they move.
