My friend is building up an 80 El Camino(just a mild 350hp build) and was curious about ignition system upgrades - like going to a coil pack rather than a distributor - he mentioned a Mallory system, but is that the best bang for the buck? What is involved in the swap to delete the distributor? I assume that a crank sensor has to be added like our cars have...

The best bang for the buck is to stay with a distributor and single coil and nice ignition box.. The hardware needed for a coil on plug system will come at a high price especially when starting at the ground up in a carburated motor.

yes

They do make a kit....no it's not cheap and doesn't make sense unless you are running a set up where ..A: a distributer will not fit (I've seen it used on roots type supercharger and tunnel ram set ups....or B: your friend has entirely too much money. A standard HEI and an msd 6al will be all he will ever need....no matter what he does to his engine. :)
