Hi Guys,

What are the mechanical and cosmetic differences on the 1986 GN, to the 1987 GN???

Grill, chrome trim on 86' all black on 87'
Door pull straps, black on 86' grey on 87'
Digital temp control option on 86'
Diameter of cruize control servo, large on 86', smaller on 87'
Different prom chip, most upgraded to BBKJ

I'm sure there's some other very minor differences. Anybody?

im guessing that the mechanical diff is the tuning in the efi? as the 86 was rated at 235hp and the 87 at 245hp. the grill on the 87 was all black, the 86 had the same grill as the 85 with a chrome strip on the top with the word buick in it. if im wrong guys, please let it be know as i think i know it all:biggrin:

buickbert

Hers is what the 86 grille looks like (pic#1). Same as the 85 also. And pic#2 is my 86 next to an 87. Hope this helps.

The 86 GN came with 3.42 8.5 rear axles and the 87 GN had a base for a 3.42 8.5 rear but had a 3.73 8.5 option upgrade for the rear.

Hate to correct, but there was never a 3.73 option actually available on any GN's, 87 or otherwise.

I hate to second him, but he's right. Although the PepBoys Clerk was telling me those twin turbo V8 GNX's are fast and that I should have gotten one, so maybe they had that option. :D

Sorry for the misinformation then, but my facts and figures book said that they did have the option for the 3.73 gears.

The 8.50 rear was available in both the Turbo Regal and the Cutlass H/O-442.
The Regal only used the 3.42 and the Cutlass only used the 3.73.

Possibly a minor difference: The dash plaque on my 86 GN in front of the passenger seat on the dash says Buick "Regal". The ones I have seen on 87 GN's say Buick Grand National. Did someone replace my dash plaque or did the 86GN's say "Regal" and 87's say Grand National? I am not sure why someone would replace the dash panel with one that says "Regal" as opposed to Grand National. Anyone have an 86 GN that says "Regal" on the dash plaque or know the answer to this question?::confused:

The plaque should say "Grand National" on the 86's just like the 87's. The "T-Types" said Regal

Another minor mechanical difference was the front cam journal on the 86's had a groove, the 87's did not.

I gotta disagree... I've yet to see a 109 block without the groove.

I have two 87 engine apart right now and they both have it.

are you maybe thinking 85s? I don't know if they have it or not.

I'm talking about the groove on the cam journal on the cam, not the one in the block.
