Borg Warner turbo in a Turbo Buick!

Thanks Nick. Was hoping this was a stock stroke 109 with a pair of Champion irons. Still interested in what this turbo will do with what it's bolted too.:)
 
Production 4.1 block with 3.625" stroke, well ported SE heads, and a solid roller cam which shifts at 7000 RPM using a 200-R4 trans, 3600 NLU 10" converter!

This is our typical high 9 sec. street build. :)

The cam is a 236/236 which has lots of torque and power with good manners. I can reach in starting the car, and it fires and will idle at 950 RPM.

With a 270 cu. in. 4.1L it will continue to produce HP to well over 7000 RPM.

A big factor in performance is the alum TA heads which have excellent flow and port velocity. We use TA alum heads since I can pick them up with a short ride across town!

For years we have done many Champion and TA heads for extreme HP levels, and both brands are about equal in max performance/flow.

As far as the BW turbo, it should easily run into the 9's with this engine/heads with 25-27 psi boost, as it is rated at 650 HP.
 
forcefed3.8 i totally agree with you, i run a smaller cam with a 6870 turbo and at 21 lbs it ran 9.87 at 139.
 
7000rpm high 9 sec street build? Way too much cam, too much overlap. That is running 9s the hard way.

The 1-2 shift is about the 1/8th mile mark, so seeing almost 100 MPH on the street will be a very rare occurrence!

"Too much overlap" is your opinion, as this is a solid roller cam with .018" valve clearance will actually give less overlap and the big bore 4.1 cylinders allow more intake air since the valve is further away from the cylinder wall.

With a 4.1 and same cam in my race car with a 70mm turbo at 18-19 psi boost, it would run 9.80 and we are 1600' above sea level, so I do not consider doing it the "hard way"! :)
 
Well, I run a 0 overlap cam, 6200 rpm shifts, and with a 4.1 runs 8.6s on 25psi with a 3 bolt 72mm turbo. I have seen many bigger and better cams run slower. I would guess you need all that rpm to couple that converter.

Interesting. Rob if you don't mind me asking, what tire height and rear end gear ratio are you running? I'm using a 28" tire with a 3.42 gear ratio and coming threw the traps at about 6600rpm on my 154mph pass with a Dusty spec'd PTC converter.

I posted details about supporting items on this specific build to add tech to possibly help others that want to go this route.

The camshaft grind discussion has already taken it slightly off-track with the cam specs discussion, as the original objective was to prove or dis-prove the use of the BW turbo for primarily street use, not what is needed or wanted to build an 8 sec. GN race car.

Opinions are fine when stated as such, but I want to stick to what the supporting items work well for the BW turbo. Mike, you are a gentleman, and certainly hope you take no offense personally, thanks.

I've personally seen several stages of this build at Nick's place. His innovation and the fab work he and Lyle have done is remarkably sanitary and Spartan.

Just this past Saturday, I witnessed this car run down the track on 5 cylinders. It surprised the hell out of me.

Once Nick gets the bugs sorted out, this car is going to be something to be reckoned with on the street and at the track as a kick-in-the-pants weekend driver.

It's a very unique build, done in car that holds many good memories, and one not so good memory, for several of us Phoenix area TB guys. That alone makes Nick's effort a special one.

Jus' sayin'.
 
Any word on when might get a 3 bolt housing?

We did one 3 bolt exhaust housing on a B-W turbo and will never do another one.

The 4-bolt version is a great turbo for a Buick V-6 and has all the advantages over the 3-Bolt Precision housing which is a nightmare and slug compared to the 4 bolt housing.
 
For the EFR turbos or for Borg Warner turbos in general?

I do not see a 3-bolt EFR turbo in the future with

Ask for Reed if you contact WORK Turbochargers. He will point you in the right direction.

This is a thread about B-W turbos, and to bring a WORK turbo ad here is out of line.

Yes, this does piss me off as you have a whole forum sell your products when you are set up with Shane.
