I broke my Buick...

I broke it pretty good this time…so the Camaro should finally be running again shortly….

It happened this AM on the way to work.

I checked the oil last night and it was down almost a quart…I meant to add some, then got distracted.
This AM in a rush, I slammed the hood and headed in to work.
As I was coming out of Santiago Canyon by Irvine Lake, I was behind a modded Mitsu EVO…should have left it alone, but….when it opened to 2 lanes, he started accelerating up the hill to show off and filled my lungs with a puff from his black fuel rich exhaust….and never one to say no to a little contest….there I went after him….
As I was closing the gap, and about to move for my pass to show him what’s what…and while dreaming about filling his lungs with methanol fumes....….a very unpleasant noise came from the engine and it just shut off….

I coasted to a stop at the entrance to the Santiago Canyon Land Fill….how convenient….decisions, decisions…

Put it in park and tried the ignition several times….all I got was a loud clunk….motor is seized….
Added a new one to the “Do not do this in a Turbo Buick” list….Accelerating WOT up hill in a car with known oil system design issues that is a quart low….

Here it is posing for a pic at the land fill entrance while waiting for a tow truck to take it back home….

It wasn't using oil at an abnormal rate considering how much and how hard I drive....every 4-5 weeks I would add back almost a quart...
I drive...uh....drove....this thing daily and abused the snot out of it.
Probably about 45,000 miles on the motor in the last 3 years and it'd be safe to say that half of those miles were at WOT ;)

It was a stock forged crank and stock caps...it's a miracle it lasted this long by most accounts...

I'm gonna vote, yes.
I was also going uphill at WOT...no front sway bar...etc....so it possibly briefly uncovered the pick-up, and then OUCH!

*Ouch*

Thats one of the reasons we put a deep sump pan on the motor that went in to this car. With the deep pan and the turbo saver the car holds like 8qt of oil.

maybe Deep Sump Oil Pan | RJC Racing for the next rebuild?

Could have been caps, crank......anything. Have you been having any transitional knock?

Sorry to hear, Tim. Time to call uncle Lou and find out how much Christmas credit you have left in savings.

Bummer !

It's coincidental that this happened right after the bigger t/body & intercooler. I just think that the stock crank couldn't handle anymore punishment & snapped. The cranks are one of the many weak points of these engines. This is a drag on the kill section & just possibly its demise with out the daily chicken kill reports. I think everyone should pass the collection plate for a new engine. After all the rooster has valiantly fought & defended the marque against the heretics that lurk the streets. Who will speak for us now.

low on alky or a pump failure?

Let us know what the autopsy reveals.

Damn Chicken that sucks, sorry to hear !!! I know this all too well...

Bryan

LOL
Gary summed it up.
The constant WOT pressure from my right chicken leg finally had it's way with the bottom end of the motor.

Alky was topped off...alky was primed...wasn't the alky.
No transitional knock....and my policy for daily driving was always to keep the tune intentionally rich and alky set to max.

Lord knows I beat the stew out of this thing....it was a matter of time, and time it was...

It happens. Atleast it sounds like you had fun while it lasted. hopefully the topend is salvageable.

well, id say u got ur moneys worth out of it. time for a stroker build now. hurry up and fix it so I can get back to my weekly kill reads by you.....:D ur still my hero chicken
