Well, I found out last week, I have Diabetes. On pills right now, level down to ~ 200 from 390. Go back next week for a follow up.

Just love stabbing my self . :frown:

No more candy , soda , etc. The diet stuff tastes like pi**. I am the same age as my Father and grandfather where when they got it.

It's a tough disease to handle but once you make the necessary lifestyle changes it's completely manageable. Even the diet soda becomes tolerable after a short period of time..:).

Good luck and stay on top of your BG levels!

I've been a typeI diabetic since I was 14. So, that means I've been diabetic for like ten eleventeen years.;) I "get" to inject insulin 4+ times a day. I was actually one of the guinea pigs for glucose testing back in 1980 at Tulsa University. Before that the only way to test glucose levels was with urine test strips. In order for glucose to even register on a urine stip was for it to be at 200+. Back then my doc wanted it to show a trace. That meant my glucose was always way over 200. I ended up in the hospital in college with a blood glucose level of 1036:eek: I wasn't doing very well, to say the least. THey tried many many times to draw blood from my arms and ankles (more than 10 times in each location) then they called in a surgeon to draw blood from my femoral artery (read "in my groin") and bubba let me tell you THAT HURT!!! After my week long hospital visit, I was asked to come down to Tulsa U to participate in a "study". When I got there I asked why "me"? They said that my EXTREME blood glucose levels were so high and that most folks that have that high of a glucose level don;t ever walk out of the hospital. So, I started taking beter care of myself. I could always do better, but at least I am still doing OK. Neuropathy has set in in my feet and in my hands. Not liking that at all. Take good care of yourself, because no one else will. Thankfully my eyes are doing great. (But most days I just can't see going to work:biggrin:) I've never been in a diabetic coma or passed out from low blood sugar. I've come VERY close a few times, though. My lowest reading has been 36 after eating a few minutes prior:eek: and that was in the middle of the night. I HATE having low blood sugar in the middle of the night. It really screws up my sleep, and it affects me all the next day. My next venture is a pump. Very soon. When I was first diagnosed with diabetes back in 1975, the doc's promised me that a cure was gonna happen with in 10-15 years. I'm still holding my breath.

Thank's Fellow's.

I'm not sure about this though: "Even the diet soda becomes tolerable after a short period of time..." :)

No Shot's yet , Just pill's. I also have Asthma and a I had a articular(spelling) spasm on the back side of my heart when I was 31 , Mild MI. So I am on Med's for that also.

With High deductible insurance and wife by out of work , money as been tight. But I am preaching to the choir everyone is hurting.

I thank the good lord Jesus that I have a good job , Wife of 31 years and family behind me.

Drop some weight, eat PROPERLY, exercise, and stay on the Metformin. Every day your numbers are up you do damage to your organs. My wife is a type II and she has a rock hard body, athletic, and not even close to overweight, so sometimes its genetic. I can hardly drink regular sodas now, way to sweet.

As far as the sodas go starting with the Coke Zero and Sprite Zero's Its O.k.
Now that it's been awhile it doesn't bother me at all. I go back and forth with the regular stuff and just think of them as totally different drinks.

Diabetes runs in the family so I get tested for it every year.

discipline, regular exercise, healthy diet. My son developed type 1 when he was five. it was terrible having to test his blood sugar, then inject insulin 3 times a day. I would have given anything for it to have been me instead of him. Take care of yourself the best you can. Good luck on your next appointment, I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

You'll get used to the diet drinks, or at least I did. I can't even take a drink of a regular Coke without thinking I am drinking syrup.

Watch all thinks you ingest, not just what you think is sweet. You will be surprised when you read the labels. Lots of sugar in just about everything. We look at everything that goes into the shopping cart.

You can do it. Just takes some effort.

Man, after reading all of this on diabetes, you've guys have really had it rough...I feel for you:( I've always been afraid of getting this disease.

I piss and moan because my hearing is going, both ears, but can still hear and play my ol' guitar, and have a wonderful wife who cares so much about me all of the time...the love I get from her everyday is the best medicine a man can have.

But to hear you all put it, it's rough, and with that I really feel fortunate I'm just going deaf (I'll throw in a real bad, painful back to bitch about also) but I'm thankful I don't have diabetes. I've known for years it can be devistating and very uncomfortable, but it is treatable. But still not nice to live with. A real drag if you ask me. Got a good friend with it also, but she only gives herself one shot a day, another buddy, two shots. Hell, even my cat has it and I have to give him two shots a day!! Tell you what, anyone afraid of the needle, see me, I'll be glad to give you your shots (not in the ass...!!! Please! Some respect here!!)

Still, you make me feel lucky and if I were the most powerful person in the universe, you guys would be the first persons I'd go and cure. Truthfully.

Take care of yourselves, and trust in the Lord...sometimes he will give you a nice surpise when you least expect it.

What made you feel the need to get tested? Sometimes I will have a week where I feel some of the symptoms but then I will have months without.I haven't been to a doctor in a while but was tested 3 years ago and was negative. My mom has it as well as an uncle. My diet sucks, but I am now 8 weeks 100% tobacco free after smoking for 16 years. I finally did it...I have about 2 urges a day, down from one every 10 minutes when I first quit. Now its time to work on my diet. I eat fast food every day at lunch for work. I'm overwieght but not even close to being obese.

Lethargic, tired, VERY thirsty, Pissing every 20-30 minutes, hard time healing wounds, blurred vision. Easy check for anyone with any of these symptoms. Find some diabetic with a glucose meter, have them prick your finger and run a 5 second test. If you blood sugar is above 105, then go to the doc for a fasting blood sugar.

Wow, Ken, your story is scary- thank God you survived those early years. I'm Type 1 as well but wasn't diagnosed until 2002. Of course, BG strip testing was available then and flex pen insulin made things a lot easier and much more manageable. However, the highs and lows were still very difficult to keep under control.

I started using an insulin pump 2 years ago and the difference was night and day. Not having to inject myself 4-6 times a day was worth the price of admission, and leveling out many of the spikes and valleys was a relief. In fact, my IAC has been under 7 since starting the pump.

By all means, try the pump if possible. And, I'm holding my breath as well for the promised cure .

Went for a physical, That how I found out. But I was drinking allot of water.

If your fasting glucose was 390 you were likely diabetic for more than a couple years. Time for a complete lifestyle change. Diet and exercise including weight training will reduce your insulin resistance to a great degree. You can easily control type 2 diabetes with a lifestyle change. You don't need to let it control you. You control it by using some self discipline.

if your fasting glucose is higher than 105. Lol. You're going to create a panic

That's why I said to go see a doc. Some folks have higher average BG levels. If my BG is less than 95 I don't feel right. Your brain is fueled by glucose. That's why I'm so dang smart.;) I figure I can solve the worlds problems if I maintain a BG of 500 or more. Just THINK of how fast my brain is working at a BG level of 500.

Just kidding of course.:p Me smart? Naw.......smart AZZ, yes, real smart, NO.:)
