Billet 67 runs 9.71

There is 2 sides to this thing guys!

Cal, and others like him, spend countless hours and dollars working on these cars to figure out combo's that work. Customers pay lots of money for this stuff. Would it be right to just come spell out letter for letter for free what a customer just paid lots for in some cases to figure out?

I know we certainly shared a lot of what we did to our race car(s) but not everything by any means...

So what is the point of this board? A forum for bragging rights? A place to see which vendor can get the most people to spend money with them? I have stated before, the vendors cant tell it all but this keeping secrets unless you pay me is going to get out of hand. More than half the TR community know "popular TR vendors" from GM High Tech when they did more TR stuff. Guess since I refuse to hop onto a bandwagon I'm going to be considered a troublemaker. Sorry, I just like to see people like like me on here. I dont think how much money to dish out should decide how fast you are able to go. That is one of the main reason people avoid these cars now! I like the true members here. Ones who tell you the truth, keep you from wasting money, or giving you a false sense of hope. I have plenty of great guys on this forum to communicate with and are happy they do what they do. I just hope others learn as I did.
Now, I didnt use any names to avoid the rants... but, if the shoe fits...lace it up!

You didn't name any names, but the shoe fits all the fast class racers. I'll speak for them because I know what it takes to get there. We spend countless hours prepping the car before it goes to the track, countless $$$ running and testing the cars, take time off work to do this, countless money maintaining them, countless $$$ testing components to (hopefully) go faster. In a perfect world we would lay this out for everybody to follow or improve on and not repeat mistakes we made, but in defense to ourselves, nobody is helping us, we are footing the bill for this technology with the vendors we use. I would hope my vendors would STFU on these public forums about what is going on in my programs, I'm sure others would agree.

In a nutshell on this thread you learned you can run 9.5x+ with a 231 ci stock block engine with iron heads. Call a good engine builder who has built these if you don't know what to do yourself.

I have been on the board for a while and I dont recall someone ever giving a false sense of hope or making me waste money. There are lots of good folks on here that give TONS of free truthful (IMO) info all the time such as Don Cruz, Bison, Jack C., Cal, etc... So just because someone is not forth coming with all there info so be it. Do you race for money at every Buick event?? Do you race in a class for points and to be #1?? A good magician never shows all their tricks.

So what is the point of this board? A forum for bragging rights?

The point of the board is to share knowledge, information, make money as the vendors do, and to create business relationships and friendships. This board has been nothing but helpful to me personally and lots of other people as well. whats wrong with a little bragging?? If you got it, flaunt it if you want!! If you spend the time, money, and effort into doing anything you love and you reap the results and want to share that with the world then so be it. Otherwise talking about someone bragging about something shows some jealousy on your part in my opinion.

Very well said.....

Bingo!

Call a good engine builder who has built these if you don't know what to do yourself.

This is the quickest and easiest way to get it done right the first time!!!! If you really want to go fast and get results do your research and find an engine builder and tuner to work with that has already BTDT a million times over. It's not rocket science, it's actually common sense. Also, as you stated get ready to take out your wallet and spend $$$ because there is no free lunch or 9 second timeslips in this world!:D

Things like this come with lots of hard work and practice. I can tell you this guy is one with his car. He knows his chit and he knows how to tune. With that said, nothing in life comes easy but with hard work and the right guy building the backbone, this can be you too!

It cost all of us money. Im sure it cost more for you to go to the track than me. I can also bet you have given some advice that helped someone or kept them from spending money when it wasnt needed. I'm proud to see the 8 and 9 second cars. I know it wasnt easy or cheap to get there. All im saying is that it wouldnt hurt to help those that are slower or asking for advice without them having to open there wallet to get someone to talk. No beef with you or any of the class racers!

Im not saying there isn't a load of helpful members because there is! I don't have time to mention them all. I have learned from stuff you posted. You seem to be taking my post the wrong way. Im not jealous of anyone here, to each their own. Ask anyone, I compliment and commend all the guys that do well, and try to help those I can. Faster that me or not. Im not that type of guy. You seen to have taken my reply to Sgrim and twisted it all up to make it seem some sort of jealous rant when it isnt.:)

IMO If you want the best tuning advice buy a FAST from Cal or Otto. (Or a TT chip from Eric) Great foundation, DLS. Buy with these guys the 1st time, make friends, get THE BEST ADVICE $$$$ can buy. END OF STORY. We all have a budget and have to work within those #'s if you can build a good motor then you don't need DLS but may need to spend more on the tuning end etc. etc. etc. IMO

YOU ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR....

fellow buick owners and racers, why does it matter whos car? wait untill you get over 70 years old then run in the 8. hell its a hassle just to get in and out of the car, im happy for the guy and i could care less his name, good thing about being old you learn to over look some things and people,
long time ago i was running in the low 10 at the gsca nats, a young man came over to my car and said I can make your car run in the mid nines i said sure you can, like no you cant, well he did, his name was cal hartline,
i have been dragracing of and on since 1957 one thing you learn there are a lot of people that will bs you about their car, back in the day at bowling green a old man said ,men lie about things one is how big their penis is and the other is how much boost they run, i never for got that statement,
I build [assemble] my own engines and trans, but i ask dan[dls] a lot of questions and buy some parts from him, i am not worth a crap at tuning my xfi
so i depend on cal and i listen to others,
so gentlemen learn all you can as fast as you can from people on this board
as they may not be around when you need them,
grim, thanks for letting me post. i really enjoy this board,
oc,

I never get tired of talking and listening to you Odell. Always enjoy our bs sessions at the track and love watching you run. And as far as Cal not disclosing who's car it is or their combo he is pry letting it be up to the owner to share the info if he so desires. And I also learned that there have been times when somebody tried coping somebody's combo and had less than favorable results. So to me I'm happy to see what the turbo can run close to the advertised numbers as far as horsepower goes.

Steve

I'm not a lawyer but some of my closest friends are and I deal with attorneys on a regular basis in my consulting practice. I believe if Cal disclosed the name and setup of a customer who specified that he wanted the information kept confidential, it is highly probable that he would receive a letter from that person's attorney. I've only been sued once in my 40 year business life but that one cost me $27,000 in legal fees to the point of my deposition and I was dismissed the case the following business day with no way to recover my legal fees.

If I were in Cal's position, I would not make any additional posts on this thread and would probably ask Shane to shut it down.

I don't understand the need to persist with trying to get info out of Cal. He said all he is at liberty to say. Its not HIS car and what he did tell was all his customer wanted for him to. All this post was for, is to let people know who are on the fence about which turbo they should select, between a 70mm or a 67mm. The 67 did run 9.71 @139mph in a heavy car. That's it. Vendors are not at liberty to disclose customers setups unless they give him that permission. So putting Cal on the spot is silly when he is NOT at liberty to discuss the details as he mentioned in his first post. Nobody on this board owes anybody nothing. Anything you do get, you should be grateful for.

Perfect.

How about this - If I have a cast 6776 dbb, what kind of gains can be expected when switching to a billet? Assume additional needed supporting mods are not an issue. My only time to the strip netted a 10.82 @ 128 - let's pretend I just swapped turbos, any ideas? I know there is more left in my car, just wondering ......

WOW !!! interesting thread !!! Cal big congrats  Thats crankin!!

Now for all the ones who need all the info so they can do the same as this unidentified owner :p Melissa ran her 9 sec pass a few years ago and I posted everything we had in the car. The only thing we didn't give out was the "tune" BUT she uses a TT chip !! If ya can't take the time an play with the car to figure it out ... wellll  Damm these cars are getting faster and faster !!
