What does the VSS control?

I just purchased an 86GN this last summer and while trying to get everything in the correct working order, I noticed that the custom dash the the previous idiot-er- I mean owner installed has VDO guages, but no plug for the vehicle speed sensor.

I know that Casper Eletronics carries translators, but they're somewhat pricey and I am a poor college student . Anyway, I was wondering what exactly the VSS controls, so that I know how bad it is on the car to run without one functioning.

I know that it controls the TCC (of which I don't completely understand the concept) and I beleive the cruise control. Any help would be greatly appriciated .

You are right, it controls the TCC and cruise. also the top speed limiter in the stock chip. if you leave it unhooked you will get a code 24 and the Check Engine light will be on.
