When i lined it up, it was the crank. Removed the baffle and tack welded it an inch lower. So far so good. Im guessing the pan was meant to be used with a girdle, which would have given it the clearance it needed. Just a theory.

Not sure a girdle-specific pan is a thing that would exist, I'm guessing a quality control problem. That gouge tells me it's only 1/4" too high. But you've fixed it. So carry on!
