Steering Shaft

I just got the Cherokee shaft the other day and went out to install on the GN. My question is how the heck does the old one come off? I worked it up and down with a prybar and hammer, but it wouldn't go far enough in either direction. I've taken these off other cars before and they usually slip right off. Am I going to have to loosen the steering column to get a little more clearance?

The shaft is supposed to collapse. Although I've had them where a hammer was required to get it to do that. Most of the time it is because the shaft gets tight on the steering column end. Having been squeezed via the clamping bolt.

Ok, so I got this stupid thing off and what do you know?

Why are they two different sizes? Did I get the wrong shaft?
