should i change fluid?

i just got my girlfriend a 93 cougar, pretty well kept. The only thing is that from the look and smell of it id'e have to say its the original transmission fluid. The tranny shifts and works perfect. The car has 82k miles and i have heard leave it alone if its never been changed. Im thinking of keeping the old fluid and changing just the filter. Any1 know of this or is it all just a myth? Or should i really just leave it alone. Thanks, Ian
