need to know about gearing i plan on putting 22 inch rear rims

i have had 22 inch rims all around on a cutlass salon and it handled very well, this is my cruiser and i will be keeping the stock t-type rims,to use also, and if some of you guys buy some magazines you will realize people
have move out of the dark ages,my last car with 22's on it got complements from people from all walks of life, you will find that i love to talk bs to the best,
but when it comes down to it we all do what we feel, when i feel the need to blow money i try my luck at the casino not drag race, but for those who dont like big wheels you going to really hate when some puts 24 on their john deer
tractor,me i love creativity even if i dont agree with it.but i being 41 like my cars to look good and still be able to kick some ass.if we all thought the same
this wouldnt be one of the best sites to be a member of.some race, some cruise, some show, some pimp tractors.
most John Deere tractors come with rims that are way bigger than 24"- closer to 36" o4 48", i think. at least on the rear. 24's would just look stupid..
and just because most people here think 22" wheels look like ass is becasue we come from a more performance oriented backgrounds. the fact is that 22" wheel with a tire that has 2" of sidewall is just not a good formula for traction- and look out for any bumps in the road or you are gonna be buying a new rim.
you also say you are keeping the stock T wheels- so that means that you aren't going to be doing any sort of brake upgrades. that is just flat out stupid- those big rims have a LOT more mass out farther from the center of mass, which means it's going to want to keep rolling while your stock brakes are trying to make it stop as you quickly approach that truck that is turning in front of you.
most people that get the big rims get them becasue they say it makes the car look faster or whatever- but why does the real performance crowd go with bigger wheels? to clear bigger brakes. it's a purely functional thing- you need an 18" wheel to clear a monster 14" brake rotor. personally, i think a 17" wheel is about the maximum that not only looks good on these cars but also leaves room for 13" brakes and also allows enough sidewall to absorb potholes and also give decent straight line traction.

i think if you want the best handling i would go 18s-20s, i have had many different cars with many different wheel/tire combos and found 18-20" range to be the best for handling and imo would look much better on a gn than 22s. 22s lose quite a bit of the comfort too. and yes i have had a car with 22s

hey smart ass i am keeping all of the stock parts because this car only has 19000 k miles ,also i will be doing some brake up grades, straight line traction is not my number one concern,i drive good enough not to shred my tires every time i leave a stop light,i applaud those who main gold is to get down the quater mile quick as they can,if you never drove a g-body or any car with bigger than stock rims ,i will file your advice in the back of my head.
some of you guy should stick to the question at hand.which was a gearing
change ,and i like the fact that some are so knowlegable and sensitive about
tractors.i got the answer that i needed.and i also learned where to post when i needed to fix my riding lawn mower its my mini me tractor.thanks

i plan on installing 22 inch rear rims which with tires measure 28 inches tall.
was thinking of installing 373 gears.

you dont need to touch the gears with a 28 inch od. most of us are already running that. you will gain mph

you smart azz hill billies need to stop watching tv and realize that every car with 22 inch rims is not a so called donk,so if you cant contribute anything,
keep your comments to your shelf ,87regal3.8sfi can i put 24's on a john
deer and can you hook me up with a tractor maybe the one you call a buick.

LOL ok seriously what's this supposed to mean?

All I tried to do was help you, but I see how in return you tried to belittle me. Ignorance doesn't get past my thick skin.

Sorry I don't know of anyone with a John Deere tractor. Despite your stereo typical attitude, I doubt there's any hillbillies here. More like people who know better. But to each his own.

But since you think you know it all I'll let you figure it out yourself.

does that Festiva in the background have some 'Dubs on it? that would be sweet..

thutch, are you serious? there are a few members with 20in wheels & I for 1 think it is overkill. I can't imagine what 22's or 24's would do, but upset my stomach.:frown: nobody & I mean nobody put's 22's on a GN or TType. rims that huge takes away from the cars appeal and not to mention the DONK thing. but hey, it is your to do what you will. know to your ? if you put anything bigger than a 26 diameter package on there, you will change the gear ratio. i have 17in on my GN & get plenty of looks & complimants. good luck with whatever you decide.

I say do it. if you like it - its your car. Forget what some of the people say. Its not like you cant unbolt 20 lug nuts and put it back if it doesnt sit right. and FYI i have a friend who has 22s on a monte and they sit inside the wheel well on a LOWERED Gbody... if done tastefully it would look pretty cool. Almost like a life size dubs model. Now all you have to do is pick some nice wheels out.

I heard from some of my folks that if u put 22" rims u do have a good chance at changing your gears. IMO we already have a low ratio that's why I just went with 19's. 22's look good on these cars to me too, but if your going to do performance upgrades later which I think your goin to want to cause those rims go slow u down big time(even while cruising) u really might want to look into some 20's. Cause If u dip on the side of me... Yeah u go be sittin up a lil higher but I'm go show out so much, side wayz up the block, doin dounutz and all:eek: the last thing a spectator go say is..."I like them 22's dawg":frown:

P.S. I have some 16" GNX style rims too with Mickey Thompson's on them so don't bite my head off:biggrin:

I ran 19x9 on the front and 20x10 on the rear for awhile. It drove well and the handling was excellent... Just kinda got over it. HOWEVER I had MANY compliments... Even here in MONTANA.... and we have A LOT of hillbillies!!!!!

on a serious note i am going for that pro touring look,i know the the
22x9.5 rim with a 255/30/22 tire measures 28 inches tall and the 215/65/15
tire measures 26 inches tall,so i was considing a gear change but kash told
me to leave the gears along i will be running 20x8.5 with 245/35/20's on the front.
If I were you, I'd begin by trying out the car with the big wheels WITH the stock gears and see how it feels. You can always change the gears later...If you decide to change them, what's important to remember is that it doesn't really matter which diameter the rims are, but the overall diameter of the wheel/tire combo. I personally use some 28" diameter tires at the rear, still have the stock gears and it drives just as good as with 26" dia. tires...
Hope this helps!...good luck,

Claude.

P.S: Whatever the other guys say, I think that the bottom line is this: IT'S YOUR CAR AND GO AHEAD AND DO WHATEVER YOU WANT TO DO WITH IT!

i might be going with some 20x10's on the rear with 275/30/20 tires which would measure 26.5 inches tall ,factory 215/65/16 measure 26 inches tall.
so i have already decided to stick with the 3.42 rears.
