Is this really happening down there?

"If you're not into street racing, why would you need that?" Riverside Police Traffic Sergeant Skip Showalter asked an enthusiast during a similar crackdown last year. "Why would you want more power going to your car?"

I swear this is the kind of crap that makes me want to move out of california, what are they going to regulate next, what size of dump you can take while going to the Crapper?? maybe they should start with the big companies who make cars that are putting over 400hp to the wheels and ask them the same question.. talk about total GOV control, this is BS..

I can't really think straight after reading that right now but how about a question like this in return:

"Officer, if you aren't into shooting people, why do you need to carry a gun?"

Ok, that sounds a little ridiculous, but you know what I mean......

The most revenue, however, will be generated from the fees imposed on twenty vehicles that were confiscated.

This is just BS! So I stopped by this local parking lot with a car show going on and the next thing I know my car is gone for good "confiscated". That would suck! Don't they smash them or turn them in to undercover COP cars? There's an exotic car show on Sat. in Irvine and the cops sit across the street and stake it out. Ask Nordy he was harassed by the Irvine PD for no front plate. While a Lambo & Ferrari behind him didn't have one either. The cop told Mike well we picked you.

Those guys need to do what a local drug spot did and that was
Every time the drug spot got raided the drug dealers filed harassment lawsuits so 5 guys at a drug spot and only two guys had drugs on them but the cops still arrested the other 3 guys anyway the lawsuits piled high and it became so expensive to defend each law suit that the dealers won their cases and got a restraining order against the local precint.

Each and every one of those guys guilty or not needs to file a complaint including harassment, civil rights violations, discrimination and a SHIP load of other stuff against
the
1-State
2-City
3-Town
4-Village
5-local PD
200 cars 200 individual law suites plus more complaints from the spectators that whir questioned.
But it has to be done every time these types of raids take place and when ever you get pulled over for something like this to take an effect.

interesting. In Burbank at Bobs, the cops actually hang around just to make sure no b.s. goes down. Although I did once see them bust this car collector for using the same plates on both his a/c cobras. One has yet to be registered in California, I guess tax on over 500k would be expensive:eek: luckily for him, they let him tow it home, and got a fine. Otherwise, the cops there actually are into cars, they know what modifications are done, but acknowledge them as being "sweet":D

That is the only place I would want to be around Burbank P.D though, they are tough:eek:

That's really dumb. That's like asking someone who had a bombshell wife with all the options "If you're not into making porn movies why would you need that" I say it for the same reasons why dogs lick them selves. Because they can! :D This whole thing seems to be aimed toward the import guys. There's a video clip I saw and they totally let the Mustang guy go  I guess that's good for us. Being on the Evo forums as well I see this is more of an issue than any domestic stories. I hear people get pulled over for any little reason and then the officer asks the driver to pop the hood. Many people I know have gotten sent to the Ref for having basic "LEGAL" mods such as exh & a open air filter. I recenlty smogged a car at a "Test only station" that had both items and it passed no prob.

Funny how the Cops on the board haven't chimed in on this one. I guess not even they can agree with this type of abuse.
But not a single comment

I would like to see just a little more substantion other than just the one article that this happened the way that the article said that it happened. Generally when cars are crushed there is a lot of noise. Also interesting that no one involved responded, and we do have some people in the Riverside area, and some secondary cars that are imports.

About 3 yrs ago I was returning from, of all things, a car show benefitting the Merced PD (replacing a dog that had been killed). Driving my show '70 Olds 442 into Fresno I came across a local gathering of nice cars, some inports & most not. I had not noticed two police cars nearby, but then did see a policeman questioning folks & another was going through some guy's trunk, so I left. One block later I was pulled over & an officer was getting obviously upset because after checking licence, etc, he walked around car & I had plates, good tires, etc., so he asked to look under the hood. Like an idiot I opened the hood, as this is a 1970 very-stock car. He points to the charcoal evap cannister & questions if that is some kind of alteration & poked around. He radios & minute later some plain-clothes Guestopo appears & starts poking around, saying the car is not smog legal. I dispute him and he says he is BAR, that the open-air filter and "this stuff" (pointing generally at the motor) is illegal. They didn't even hear me, could not care less, & gave a ticket for Ref. Only. On my orig try it failed for not having orig-style Q-Jet carb & no fuel return line (I had replaced fuel tank that did not have those fittings - which only Ca. cars had). They crawled over every inch of that car, tail-pipe tested it & tested all vac lines, etc. They thought it was funny & boasted about failing a new Ferrari or such that also been tagged elsewhere. I got the laugh on return visit, as it was freezing, windy, and raining like hell. They could not pull the car all way in test station so half was outside, & those clowns had to fine-tooth the car again while getting frozen & soaked (they even go under the car from front to back). Because it passed it cost me $10.00 "Administration fee". From beg. to end it tooks months & had to go twice to courthouse standing in line with dregs of humanity. I guess most folks just pay the fine (think was $300) & that is what PD wants. So....I didn't just read about this true story, it DOES happen that way.

I was watching the extra inning Cub game...

OK its really obvious why local enforcement is doing that. Ur damn right its about revenue. I have no problem with that. U (California residents) elected the Public Officials that passed the laws being enforced there. Why complain about it now. Secondly anyone who is not a car enthusiast (the majority) will more than likely support that enforcement because U, I, and everyone else knows the only reason people gather at night like that is to try and set up street races. Even if ur not looking to race, you know full well that when one is set up everyone will be driving to the race spot. We all have done it, so be it! Im just trying to figure out what the outrage really is here. Nobody on this board is into the rice-thing anyway. When and if it becomes an issue to the Buick community then rag about it. Remember guys our cars are for old guys, not 16 year olds working at Blockbuster video. Let them suffer like we did when we were young. By the way my Cubbies won in 15 innings 6-4:biggrin:

You have one great point after another (other thread “tint windows”) and now this
But what happens after they are done eating their rice.
Who has more money into cars? Teenagers with neon lights or the American muscle older guys. Could this be considered a testing ground for the program before they come after the real money guys with the BBK 70 SS Chevelles and 409 impalas ohh don’t forget about the GNs with the killer reps.
But of coarse when I was a teen all of my friends that their Dads whir cops never worried about getting arrested they just worried about their Dads getting a phone call home from a fellow co-worker.
Today is somebody else’s kid in a few years it could be mines, maybe not yours so for you/Cops Who cares? But not for me.
Rice or not Abuse is Abuse
Today them tomorrow you/me

Pre-74 cars are smog except.

Right! Thus, why worry?
Because....
1. When on one of their programs, the authority does not know that nor care, all fish in the net are, well...fish in their net.
2. I learned that any car of any year is subject to scrutiny. Technically, all cars must have emissions same as when auto was produced, or same as the motor in it. So, if a '39 rod has a '95 chevy or whatever in it, then the entire auto must meet emissions (visual & tailpipe) to meet '95 (or whatever year the motor is) standards.
3. So, if you have a totally-stock '08 Z06, '08 Ford Explorer, or '39 Hi-Boy, You would have to take time off work, stand in lines, jump through hoops,
and either pay a ticket for an all-stock car...or proove that there is no alteration (which means going to a Referee...not a Test Only...a Referee, there is a difference. At a Referee they check for and test Everything that has anything to do with fuel, spark, emission, engine warm-up, (choke if has one), etc, etc., it takes about an hour). It's like being thrown in the Drunk- Tank for being on the same street as some vagrant.
I'm kind of old fashioned & enjoy what should be my liberty...not live like the novel "1984".

I'm a "cop" on this board and I'll chime in.

First, I took a look at the link. Seems that website is pretty anti law enforcement. Look at how the article is written. Not a very fair representation of the incident in my opinion.

Second, we have a parking lot in our area that has this same type of gathering that takes place with enthusiasts. I can tell you after working the area for a while that all these people do not just get together to talk cars and admire their cars. Alot of other things are going on, including racing on a highway that is constantly being rated as one of the most dangerous roadways in America. I have investigated several fatals that have happened when the enthusiasts just got together.

Third, we all keep our cars legal. If they are not legal they shouldn't be on the roadway. If they get ticketed or towed for improper equipment or paperwork they shouldn't complain. Remember operation of a vehicle on the public roadways is a priviledge not a right. Inspection of the vehicle and the paperwork assosciated with the vehicle comes with the priviledge.
