I'm not exactly sure WHY it goes gooey or when... but it's a heat/break down related issue... the FWD 3.8's suffer the same fate.. only ours is green 
that would be my only complaint about the buick 3.8 is the coils and ignition module right on top of the motor... they get heat soaked pretty quickly... usually causeing idle and off idle stumbling that ppl look else where to track down...
I seriously think that a relocation "kit" would add alot of life to the stock ign mod/coil packs
