Cannot shift to 1st gear ??

I put a mystery trans 2004r brf in the GN and it seems to not have a first gear selection. First gear works and it shifts great through all 4 gears but even if I disconnect the linkage and shifter cable and move the bracket by hand it only goes P R N OD D 2 and stops. Any ideas?
