wanted to know if anyone on here has visited the salt flats, saw a youtube vid of someone in a GN getting crazy there. always wanted to go but distance and having the wife get off work to go doesn't seem to line up to help. even better has anyone on here ran their car or a car or bike on it?

Twice

Did not run my car but went with a friend who has an 88 Cutlass--572 -720HP Big block Chevy crate eng. I believe he now has a pro stock Olds eng. in it. 240 MPH---Everyone should see the Salt Flats @ least once. IMO not a spectator sport but some very wild rides there. We pulled the car on an open trailer 1750 miles each way. From central Indiana to Wendover Utah. 3 plus days to get there and dropped a valve on the second run down the flats. 96 degrees with low humidity. Be sure to take a straw hat and DARK sun glasses. The sun sparkling off the white salt will blind us older people. I saw young people running around with no glasses on--not me. Safety tech is VERY strict so be sure your car is RIGHT. They let nothing slide!!!!!

Been to the salt flats three times for Speedweeks. It's an incredible experience that everyone should have once. You'll see the strangest cars out there - cars running turbo'd straight six Chevy's out of garbage trucks, little four banger flatheads, V12 flatheads, big twin turbo diesels, everything. The racers are the nicest people too, they'll generally talk to anyone at any time. I even got to get down inside of one guy's bellytanker my first time out there. Don't know how those guys race staring through a series of mirrors.

But like LOT said - watch the sun. I was sunburned so bad last time I went that I blistered, not fun. It's intense sun that at times you don't notice. The spectating requires a pair of serious binoculars, but the real action is in the pits and hanging out with everyone at the starting line.

cool i want to go

i'd love to go, i've been to the maxton mile or texas mile once and want to go back, but would love to check it out. saw a movie called the fastest indian and it was a true story. at the texas mile most of the people out there are real nice and don't mind you checking out their cars and stuff. chatting and everything, i also think any gearhead should visit bonneville atleast once in their lifetime. kinda like a gearhead's mecca, holy ground considering the names and records set there.

We have a guy around here in CT that goes out there every year to run his car. Actually set the record in his class and joined the 200mph car. Check out his website, really cool guy. Quite a personal website. Street Rod Steve's Garage

Bonneville car section is here......... Street Rod Steve's Personal Collection
